Máté Gábor: Vízkezelés és erdei sertéstartás a szerémségi Báza és Sztudva folyók árterében

Gábor Máté Water management and pig herding in the Upper Sriem region, Vojvodina The upper Sriem region has a peculiar place in the land use of the Carpathian-basin. This paper studies the water management and pig herding practice in the forest of River Bosut and summarizes the empirical observations of a short-term fieldwork. The forest of River Bosut serves as a retention area for the river Sava. At the Sava, a water pump and a dyke system was built to protect nearby villages from water hazard. Due to the water management of the 1960’s some negative impacts occurred, such as the drying and shrinking of oak forests. On the other hand, several advantageous attributes have been preserved. The floodplain has not been transformed drastically; due to the lack of canalization in the region. The upper Sriem has a long history of pig herding. Nowadays, 40 farmers deal with pig herding in Morovic and Visnjicevo. It is a profitable activity, although the number of farmers are decaying. From an ethnographical point of view pig herding displays considerable adaptivity to agricultural regimes. The essence of this pursuit has not changed for centuries, but the agricultural instruments have altered. Subsistence of pig herding depends on the transmittance of local agricultural knowledge, legal conditions and on the resolution of some local conflicts between herders and authorities.
