1920 8O7 No. 849. 8354/pol. The Minister of Hungary to the Vatican, Count Somssich, to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Count Emeric Csáky. [TRANSLATION] Code telegram No. 60. ROME, December 4, 1920. With reference to your code telegram Nos. 35-36. 1 I called Monsignor Tedeschini's attention again today to the case of Batthyány. I emphasized that the appointment of the new bishop will create a painful impression in Hungary and will cause much damage to the prestige of the Holy See. Tedeschini promised to raise the issue again with the Holy See. Schioppa's report has not yet arrived. With respect to Batthyány's letter, I pointed out that he signed it, barely knowing what it contained, when he was deeply hurt by the way the Czechs mistreated him. I denied categorically the obviously tendencious rumours that Batthyány was unpopular in the bishopric. No. 850. 41.158/9. The Hungarian Chargé d'affaires in Vienna, Mr. Parcher, to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Count Emeric Csáky. [TRANSLATION] Code telegram No. 5x4. VIENNA, December 6, 1920. The Austrian Government informed me today that it would take over the 300 carloads of flour and is prepared to deposit at once the cash guarantee computed on the 47 [paper] crown basis in a bank to be designated by the Hungarian Government. It requested, however, that the conditions concerning the day on which the flour must be returned should be changed, (May 31 instead of March 31); it also requested a reconsideration of the amount of liquidated damages in case the barter is not carried out by Austria. This request is supported by the argument 1 Supra, Doc. No. 839.
