Szabó János szerk.: Fragmenta Mineralogica Et Palaentologica 24-25. 2007. (Budapest, 2007)

Material — A bit fragmentary M2 sin. (V 59.1145, Plate II: 3) and one M 3 sin. fragment (V 59.1134, Plate II: 4). Measurements — M2 sin. (length: cca. 100 mm; maximal width: cca. 70 mm); M3 sin. fr. (length of the fragment: 100.65 mm; width at the second lophid: 80.85 mm). Remarks — The locality 7 of both specimens is Budapest—Kőbánya; their age is Sarmatian (probably MN 8). Based on the measurements and the stage of the wear, they belonged to the same individual. SCHLESINGER described four specimens (M2 sin. et dext. and M3 fr. sin. et dext.) from the locality and he figured the M3 fragment mentioned above, the right M3 fragment and the right M 2 (SCHLESINGER 1922, Plate VII: 7, 9 and Plate VIII: 10). The measurements, the morphology of the crown and the degree of the wear of the two M2S are almost the same, so we can be sure that all of the above mentioned four remains belonged to the same animal. SCHLESINGER described the remains as Mastodon (Bunolophodon) angustidens CUVIER forma subtapiroidea SCHLESINGER because of the slightly zygodont character of the crown of the M 3 fragments. On the basis of the lack of the zygodont crests on the posttrite halflophids, we can establish that the remains are not Zygolophodon teeth. Genus uncertain "Mastodon" grandincisivus SCHLESINGER, 1917 incertae sedis (Plate II: 6) Material — Several postcranial bones and bone fragments, the left and right lower jaws with M3S, the upper and lower tusks and the M 3 s. Measurements — M 3 sin. (length: 246.7 mm; max. width: 97.35 mm), (Plate II: 6); M 3 dext. (length: 250.5 mm; max. width: 98.65 mm); M 3 sin. (length: cca. 210 mm; max. width: cca. 105 mm); M 3 dext. (length: cca. 220 mm; max. width: 102.9 mm). Remarks — The locality of the remains is Budapest— Pestszendőrinc; their age is Late Pannonian (probably MN 12). They belonged to the same individual; their inventor}' number is V 79.34 SCHLESINGER gave a very detailed description of the material as Mastodon (Bunolophodon) grandincisivus SCHLESINGER and figured the teeth on Plate I—II; Plate III: 1, 7; Plate IV: 1-3 and Plate V: 2. The taxonomic status of this taxon is very uncertain as one can see for example in SHOSHANI & TASSY (1996) or m GASPARIK (2001). Genus Anancus AYMARD, 1855 Anancus arvernensis (CROIZET & JOBERT, 1828) (Plate II: 1-2) Material — Two specimens; a lower left M 3 from Jászberény (V 60.1750; Plate II: 1) and a right mandible fragment with M3 dext. from Ajnácskő (now Hajnácka, Slovakia) (Plate II: 2). Measurements — Jászberény specimen (length: 210.50 mm; max. width: 88.2 mm); M 3 of the Ajnácskő specimen (length: 187.15 mm; max. width: 77.85 mm). Remarks — It is interesting that the latter specimen had been listed twice in the inventory book: V 60.1746 as Anancus arvernensis and V 78.125 as Mastodon arvernensis. Neither the Jászberény nor the Ajnácskő M 3 show the typical alternation of halflophids, characteristic to Anancus arvernensis molars. SCHTJ^SINGER described the Jászberény specimen as Mastodon (Bunolophodon) longirostris/Mastodon (Dibunodon) arvernensis transitional form (SCHLESINGER 1922, Plate IX: 6) and the Ajnácskő specimen as Mastodon (Dibunodon) arvernensis (SCHLESINGER 1922, Plate XIII: 2). This determination is a bit strange because the Ajnácskő specimen does not show alternation so its morphology is rather a longirostris type than a typical arvernensis. The age of the Jászberény specimen is unknown (Middle Pliocene or Levantian in SCHLESINGER 1922) and Late Pliocene (MN 16) of the Ajnácskő specimen.
