ISABELLA JAGIELLON (1519-1559) IN THE HUNGARIAN CULTURAL MEMORY Summary This essay presents the figure of Queen Isabelle in 15-16“1 century historical works of Ferenc Forgách, Sebestyén Borsos, Antal Verancsics, Gergely Bánffi, Ambrus Somogy as well as in 19,h century literary texts of Zsigmond Kemény, Mór Jókai and Károly P. Szathmáry. This essay also analyzes and compares the 19th century paintings of Miklós Barabás and Sándor Wágner. In their own time period, women who lived differently from society's norms - also the queen from abroad - were judged based on the given power relations. Even though women got into these kinds of situations because of their gender, their con­flicts should be viewed not only as a conflict between men and women, but also as a 39
