The history of Polgárdi
Christian world. After the withdrawal of the Turks, on 20th May, Pál Széchényi, the bishop of Veszprém held a thanksgiving service in the county seat. The liberation of Fejér County was finished in 1688 as the part of a several-year long process. After regaining Buda (1686), the northern territories of the county became free. Later, after the defeating of the Turks occupying Palota (Várpalota) and the castle of Csókakő, the territories of the northeast and those of the Mezőföld became free of the compulsions of the life under enemy rule. Until the end of the 17th century, the burdens of broading and garrisoning the Christian troops allied to chase out the Turks were constant. This meant hard trial especially for the inhabitants of the settlements which tided over the period of the Turkish occupation - especially its last decades - in appropriate economic power. Polgárdi was one of these villages. The inhabitants complained about the almost unbearable burdens to the leaders of Fejér County reorganized in 1692. In the years after the chasing out of the Turks the basic task was to preserve and to grow the population and its economic power. Twelve serf families from Szentmiklós in Somogy County settled down in Polgárdi. At the end of the 17th century 52 landed serf householders lived in Polgárdi. The number of the cottars with a house was no more than one, that of the cottars living in someone else's house was 24. The property status of the tax-paying population compelled to services was rather varied. 48% of them had neither a plough-land nor a meadow. They belonged to the lowest level of the serfs and assured - by their free manpower - the cultivation of the better-to-do serfs' lands and that of the territories directed by the domain. Ferenc Rákóczi 's national efforts reached Transdanubia in the winter of 1703/1704. When Sándor Károlyi - with 5000 kuruc soldiers - crossed the ice of the Danube from the Csallóköz and began his Transdanubian campaign the national efforts of independence spread quickly throughout the county.
