VI. Utószó

PI ET ATI ET SCIENT1I which means: to piety and sciences. The first Hungarian seminary was founded by Miklós Oláh in Nagyszombat (today Trnava, Slovakia), in 1566, which was the legal predecessor of the Esztergom Seminary. The statue of Milkós Olahis a bit higher than of life size, its total height is about 230 cm. The size of the fundament is 60 x 70 cm. The maximum width is 90cm. In 1678, in Nagyszombat archbishop György Szelepcsényi founded a so-called pre-seminary (it was a religious institution for young boys -usually under the age of 16- who planned co go to seminary. This kind of institution provided them with a special kind of secondary studies: usually they had the same subjects as their mates in other secondary schools, but beside these they also had some preparatory activities and subjects concerning their later seminary-life - eg. more religion classes, more Latin, and they prayed office as well.). The pre-seminary was called Marianum. The present building in Esztergom used to house both the seminary and the pre-seminary. The statue of Szelepcsénvi together with the one of Oláh are perfect pieces bearing several features of late classicism on the way toward romanticism. The statues match in size. In 1953 the dwellers of the building were forced to leave by military power. A number of works of art were exiled into the crypt of the Basilica. 18. The Frontage Ornament of the Building of the National Savings Bank. It is to be found in 21. Széchenyi Square. It was made of sandstone. The building was designed by József Hild, and the construction was finished by i860. On the frontage we can see a symbolic figure of a sitting woman, she is resting her left hand on a beehive. At her right hand we can see the symbols of industry and agriculture. Under it there are The Arms of Hungary, surrounded by wreathes of oak leaves and of laurel. During the communism the crown was cut off from the top of the Arms. On the two sides of the crown we can see the inscription: Savings Bank. We understand that the whole ornament was made by Andreas Schrott, an Austrian sculpture. 19. The Statue of Saint Orban. It stands in Bánomi-road. It was made of sandstone. The inscription on it says: Saint Orban. prav for us! This statue was erected by Ferenc Belkovics, in 1887. Pope Saint Orban is patron saint of the vineyard owners. On another mount a chapel was built in his honour as well. After Wolrd War II the statue was destroyed, its head was broken down. It was Mihály Dinnvés who fixed it. One arm of the statue was also broken down.
