Facts about Cuba President Reagan, in his recent speach before the OAS, gave us his political analysis of the Caribbean nations, in which he said, among other things, “the dark future is foreshadowed by poverty and repression in Castro’s Cuba...”. There can be no worldwide standard definition of poverty, since the peoples of the world still live at vastly different levels of development. However, the amount of food consumed per person, is about as universal a standard as we can find, since people must, as a minimum, survive, before they can learn that they may or may not be impoverished in other respects. The following tabulation of food available per person was obtained from the most recent data published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). In the 23 years since the Cuban people won their revolution, and rid themselves of the fascist Batista- regime, they have achieved a higher level of food consumption than any other Caribbean country. What has prevented the governments of El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, etc. from achieving the same success, with their “free” political systems, in the same 23 years period? Cuba does not have to export arms to El Salvador to instigate revolution there, as claimed by the U.S. State Department in its famous White Paper, now proven to have been false. Cuba has only to bring peoples from those countries to visit and explore its countryside (as I did in a recent two-week visit) in order to convince them that revolution is the only way that they will achieve a better way of life. They will see nurseries, elementary schools, health clinics, vast housing construction, electricity, paved roads, and yes, television antenna on thatch-roofed huts, all over rural Cuba. The program for economic development of the Caribbean area proposed bv President Reagan is no different from those proposed bv previous administrations in the last 20 years. If we really believe in a people’s right to self-determination, as stated in our Declaration of Independence “... that whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness”, then the most moral and humanistic policy for the United States is to allow the peoples of Central and South America to work out their destinies without our military and economic interference. B.S. A WARPED IMAGE The massive propaganda campaign against the socialist countries, presumablv directed at Poland, is engineered by President Reagan’s apostles, the obedient support of a battery of professional con men representing the mass media. They keep the populace “locked in” through “newsbreaks” at intervals of one hour around the clock, designed to impress the American people with a warped image of life “behind the Iron Curtain”. They want people to shoulder the full burden for armament extravaganza and accept a tax structure favoring the rich, glaringly revealing upper-class cynicism toward the lower strata of society, Reagan reneges on his promise of a dialogue with the Soviet Union on the issue of disarmament and peace, forced on him by pressure of world public opinion. The tragedy of our times is to'have a man at the helm of a nation wielding awesome power, a man that can be described as a mediocre actor in Hollywood and a bad actor in Washington, D.C. He lightly conducts affairs of state as though he were enacting a scenario in one of his pictures. Yet, people still accept automatically the cultivated false image of America. “America the Beautiful” is a conditioned reflex! Although possessing the wherewithal to attain the heights in moral leadership of the world, the USA, impelled by greed in economic and political circles, has become the citadel of reaction, following Nazi Germany in a bid to reverse the course of human progress toward a medieval concept of class domination. Power and wealth tend to fuel the process of degeneration and led the way to the extinct Roman Empire. . _ Joseph sparacino (Letter from the “Churchman”, March 1982.) WANTS MORE HUNGARIAN MATERIAL ON ENGLISH PAGE Until you folks started the English page in the Magyar Szó, I never looked at it because I don’t read Hungarian. Now I find it quite interesting and informative However, I have one suggestion. Whatever you publish on the English page about American issues, such as peace, Reaganomics, Cuba, labor problems, etc. we can find in the American press. What I am looking for is information about the native land of my folks. So please let us have more articles on Hungary and less about American and world issues. J.Palagyi, Conn.
