A nagykanizsai páholyház LÁSZLÓ NÉMETH: THE HISTORY OF THE FREEMASONIC LODGE ‘MUNKA’ OF NAGYKANIZSA 1890 - 1920 Summary The formation of the ’Szabad Ácsok páholya’ (Free Carpenters’ lodge) in Varasd at the end of the 18th century can be considered as the beginning of the freema- sonic movement in County Zala. Its activity became consummate after the „relo­cation” to Zalaegerszeg in 1787. The county’s principal personnel and the classi­cal intellectuals directed the work of the Zalaegerszeg lodge, called ’To the sound advice’. The second half of the 19th century was a significant period con­sidering the development of the movement. The ’Munka’ (Labour) lodge was established in 1890 in Nagykanizsa and further on it played a determinant role to form the town’s intellectual and economic image.
