A nagykanizsai páholyház LÁSZLÓ NÉMETH: THE HISTORY OF THE FREEMASONIC LODGE ‘MUNKA’ OF NAGYKANIZSA 1890 - 1920 Summary The formation of the ’Szabad Ácsok páholya’ (Free Carpenters’ lodge) in Varasd at the end of the 18th century can be considered as the beginning of the freema- sonic movement in County Zala. Its activity became consummate after the „relocation” to Zalaegerszeg in 1787. The county’s principal personnel and the classical intellectuals directed the work of the Zalaegerszeg lodge, called ’To the sound advice’. The second half of the 19th century was a significant period considering the development of the movement. The ’Munka’ (Labour) lodge was established in 1890 in Nagykanizsa and further on it played a determinant role to form the town’s intellectual and economic image.
