MÁRIA MOHOS: ATTRACTION EXERCISED BY KESZTHELY AND TAPOLCA ON SMALL VILLAGES (Summary) The two towns in the western part of the Balaton-basin belong to two different administrative districts. Because of their disparate natural en dowments and in consequence of their dissimilar historic past these towns played different roles in the course of times. At the turn of the 19 th /20 th century Keszthely became the centre of the newly developing holiday-making and because of her agricultural academy also turned into a seat of education. Tapolca became a junction through the Budapest railway line, the construction of which was finished in 1909 and also — as evidenced by the statistics — through the fact that due to the rapid land transport numbers of wine merchants settles here. Despite differing traits it is a common feature to both towns that they are surrounded by small villages. A detailed study of the two towns on either side of the county border showed that the regrouping and organization of the small villages into one district was expedited by the natural and ad ministrative boundaries. At the same time also contacts entirely independent of administrative arrangements developed. To a certain extent a sort of division of labour developed between the two towns and by lending mutual help to each other they were successful in providing for the supply of the population in the villages surrounding them. The historic exploration of the various partial areas to future planning and to a coordinated development of the territories along the administrative boundaries.
