GYULA ERDÖDI: THE DEVELOPMENT OF APPRENTICE TRAINING WITHIN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IN BARANYA COUNTY (Summary) In his study the author surveys the development of the training of industrial apprentices in Baranya county. After throwing some light on the situation of traditional training within the guildsystem and in the so-called drawing-schools instituted by Joseph II, his focus is mainly on training in the industrial school. This school was opened in 1846 in Pécs. The training here was not particularly successful as the guilds were anxious to keep away their apprentices because of the worktime loss. After 1848 the guilds started to deteriorate in Baranya too. Despite the Industrial Act in 1872 no significant progress can be evidenced in the training provided by the industrial school. The main obstacles were: the lacking basic knowledge of apprentices (writing—reading —arithmetic); their physical overload and a lack in control exercised over training. A change was brought about by the 1884 Industrial Bill under the provisions of which a number of new industrial schools were established in Baranya (in Mohács, Mágocs, Németboly, Siklós, and in the Zsolnay factory in Pécs). By the end of the 1890s the financial support for training increased and the equipment of schools was improved. Due to these circumstances the homecrafts are pushed more and more into the background even in the villages.
