JÓZSEF GULYÁS: REGRESSIVE TRENDS IN THE CULTURAL LIFE OF SMALL VILLAGES (Summary) As a rule intellectual culture and education are those to suffer most from the effects of an unbalanced development of economy and culture. The adverse effects resulting from an unorganic development of socialist culture turn into sources of irritation to public thinking and general feelings of communities, mainly at times when economy and settlements are developed at a more accelerated pace than cultural infrastructure. Despite the unquestionable evidence of intellectual progress in the southern Transdanubian areas, the inconsistencies of and barriers to cultural development of the village population resulting from an inadequate basic cultural provision prove to be rather disappointing. Some of these problems are pointed out by the author who — thoungh using some statistics to illustrate the cultural progress of the region — this time voices his concern rather in form of an essay.
