ANTAL ANDRÁSSY: WORKER- AND CRAFTSMAN EDUCATION IN THE SETTLEMENTS ALONG THE LAKE BALATON IN THE SOMOGY COUNTY BEFORE WORLD WAR II. (Summary) The study identifies four periods of worker- and craftsman education in the period till 1941. The first follows events prior to the turn of the century, the second till March 1919, the third till the overthrow of the Hungarian Soviet Republic of 1919 and the fourth reviews the time between 1919 and 1941, the period of the Horthy regime to the time Hungary entered World War II. The author offers a detailed analysis of the fourth period and illustrates tne efforts made by the organized workers — among them the communist underground — under circumstances of extreme terror. At that time worker- and craftsman education constituted almost the one single legal opportunity for communists. After the overthrow of the Hungarian Soviet Republic, the prevailing regime naturally tried to exert its influence over the workers and craftsmen. The author also gives a picture of these so-called „official" circles and cultural associations supporting the regime along the southern shores of lake Balaton.
