COP LOS ANGELES őuu California During the month of July, many various groups left for Europe via airliners, among them were William Penn members: President of our Branch and Mrs. John Bálint and Helen Korossy, who spent four wonderful weeks with relatives and friends. They returned tired, but happy for having been back to the Land of their birth for a visit. With another group of late President’s widow, Mrs. Imre Gyorvary and Mrs. Kolumban went to Szatmár Megye to visit re'atives. We also had a visitor from Hungary, in Los Angeles, Mr. Stephen Szitku’s Mother, Mrs. Stephen Dun-President Albert Kertesz. The Club accepts only married couple as members and one or both must be of Hungarian origin. We are happy to see that our Branch members in Dayton in addition to being active in our own Branch 249 are also leaders in other community movements. Shown below is Jacob Deutsch outgoing President handing the gavel to newly installed President Louis Vassy. Seated is Paul Kelemen, who acted as toastmaster. csak, from Budapest. We welcome her in our midst and trust that she will enjoy her visit to this country. We mourn the loss of three members during the past month: Stephen Gal, Age 76, Stephen Szedlak, Age 77 and Albert Ónodi, Age 72. YOUR HEALTH Aesop and Aristoteles, Charles Lamb and George VI. of England, Erasmus and Moses all stuttered. * * » There are more than 1,300,000 persons in this country who stutter. * * * Half of these stutterers are children. * * * In ninety per cent of stutterers, the condition is apparent before the age of ten, and in most cases before the age of five. * * * Stuttering is no respecter of social or economic status, religion, race or degree of intelligence. * s;: * Stuttering has been recognized as a speech problem since the dawn of civilization. * * * It is mentioned in the hieroglyphics of the ancient Egyptians and in the Bible. * * * Stuttering is defined as a disturbance in the smooth flow of speech due to spasms involving the functions of breathing, utterance of vocal sounds, and articulation or enunciation of words and sentences. * * * It has long been believed that stuttering is caused by some physical dysfunction or abnormality in the the speech tract. * * * Now it is accepted that stuttering is sometimes associated with emotional factors. * * * Research is difficult, because no two stutterers are alike in makeup or development. * * * It is assumed there is a hereditary factor involved, based on studies of families of stutterers. * * * Stuttering does not have anything to do with the intelligence of the stutterer for like other people he may be equal to or above the average in intelligence. * * * From four to eight times as many males are affected as females. * * * Treatment includes alleviating the patient’s emotional and mental conflicts. DO YOU KNOW? The first infant delivered by Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to graduate in medicine in the United States, was Mary B. Hussey, who became a doctor and the first life member of the Medical Women’s International Association. * * * More than two-thirds of all adults wear eyeglasses.
