PAGE 6 November 19, 1958. William Penn Motor City news BRANCH 18-V — DETROIT, MICHIGAN (Formerly Branches 36-V and 443-V) By Jolán Luca» OCTOBER CARD PARTY REPORT The first social afternoon of the newly organized WILLIAM PENN SPORTS AND SOCIAL CLUB held Sunday, October 12, directly after the Branch 18-V monthly meeting, was more successful than anticipated. The fact (that this was the first time a social get-together was held at the new location was of great importance. Would the William Penn membership in the Detroit metropolitan area admit that times were changing ■— that a new location was necessary ? Would the veteran membership support «the second and third generation clubs ? How much competition would there be from other clubs and societies in the former neighborhood ? The answer was plain — faithful old friends attended the event, and bright new faces were also seen. A long list of members, and nonmembers too, donated cakes and prizes to help put our show on the road. Donations were made by the following, which included women officers, wives of other officers, spouses of the bowlers (in surprising numbers), and non-members: Mrs. John Denes (wife of first vice-president); Mrs. Katalin Demeter, auditing committee; Elvira László, Second vicepresident; Mrs. Elsie Saytos, recording secretary Mrs. Martin Marton (wife of branch president); Mrs. Gaspar Papp (wife of Auditing Committee Chairman in the Home Office); Mrs. Stephen Danko (supervisor of William Penn Junior Club); Mrs. Jesse Somergary (wife of Branch 56-R president);) bowlers’ wives, Mrs. Joseph Lorincz, Mrs. Steve Kekes, Mrs. Andy Bobrocky, Mrs. Carl Lucas, yours truly THE FERRET; Marie Gallovieh (recording secretary of the Sportts and Social Club); Mrs. Theresa László; Mrs. Samuel Toth (formerly from 429-V — nice to see dear Mrs. Toth, whose káposztás rétes made a hit); and non-members Mrs. Rose Keresztes and Mrs. Joseph Kuritar. No one was more surprised than your Ferret at the wide variety of cakes and the many beautiful prizes; more so, believe me, I hadn’t anticipated as many guests. Thanks to all of you for attending. These social afternoons will be a regulán feature of Branch 18-V and its two clubs from September till the weather becomes too stifling in the summer. MAKE IT A HABIT - the 2nd Sunday afternoon of each month is WILLIAM PENN DAY. 1st - branch meetings at 2 p. m. - 2nd - Social afternoon beginning about 4 p. m. Third — Sports and Social Club meetings after the party. If you reserve the second Sunday of each month for William Penn affairs, it still leaves plenty of time for your other social activities. PLACE? Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Hall, 1125 Fort Street, corner of Montie Road in Lincoln Park. On November 9, the social afternoon will be for the benefit of the Annual William Penn Children’s Christmas Party which will be in December. Watch your local newspapers for the exact date. Which reminds me — thanks to Mrs. Amelia Fodor, publisher of the WILLIAM' PENN and the DETROITI ÚJSÁG; more thanks to Mrs. Ernest Palos, publisher of the SOUTHWEST JOURNAL; special thanks to the MELLUS NEWSPAPERS, publishers of seven newspapers for seven down river communities. These English newspapers will help cover William Penn events for those readers who do not receive the Hungarian papers. Also watch your WILLIAM PENN issues, both Hungarian and English, for information about future events. Didn’t I tell you that Branch 18- V was expanding its social activities to include all generations, many tastes? Do come and visit us — you won’t be sorry! Some of the members from Branch 500-V in the northeastern section of Detroit called me and were sorry they couldn’t attend our party because of the fact that their branch meetings are also the second Sunday of every month. Why not join Branch 18-V and let us all work together ? * >{. * The branch team members received their brand-new King Louis shirts, They are trying very hard to give the Association a boost by aiming for first place. Did I ever tell you they ended just IV2 points behind first place last season? It was touch and go the last couple of weeks, but as the old saying goes,“The best team came in 2nd place”. We hope that when the new sfcason starts next September there will be several William Penn teams in Detroit and area. Contact - the Sports and Social Club NOW for information about teams, bowling lanes, etc. Club officers are: George Marton, president; Steve Kekes, vice-president; Jolán Lucas, corresponding secretary and treasurer; Marie Gallovieh, recording secretary; Andy Bobrocky and “Skip” Lucas, auditors. This club is not only for bowling activities; it is also a social club to acquaint .the second and third William Penn membership with each other; also any sports activity will be encouraged, given sufficient interest. Look us up — we’re a gay bunch! * * * INTRODUCING: From time to time I have mentioned Mrs. Elizabeth Foldvary, office clerk at the district office, located at 3920 Fort Street in Lincoln Park. For your information, let’s take a closer look at Betty, as she is familiarly known to her friends. She is the daughter of Louis Lakatos, retired; a niece of Mrs. John Yana; mother of 21 year old Anthony, ;who has two more years in the Air Force and who is a candidate for one of the William Penn bowling teams and the Sports Club when he becomes a civilian. Betty was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on Buckeye Road (which should be familiar to the members since the William Penn Fraternal Home is on Buckeye). The gal graduated from Southwestern High School (my old Alma Mater, of all places, just four years after I left the old school). Her business training is wide and varied; with Detrola Corp. for over eight years and with Square Deal, as a group leader, for nine years. Betty is efficient, pleasant and speaks Hungarian and English with equal ease. Call the district office for any and all information regarding your insurance policies, at WArwick 8-0887. If you want the district managers to collect at your home, let Mrs. Foldvary have the required information which she , will pass on to the proper individual. I Drop in at the office and become acquainted with our first full-time office clerk. She’s quite a nice person. * * URGENT — IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS — The annual end-of-ithe-year branch meeting will be held on Sunday, December 14 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall mentioned above. This important meeting will begin promptly at 2 p. m. and will cover such important matters as election of officers for 1959, the annual budget of expenses, discussions of fraternal, social and sports activities for the coming year, and many other worthy subjects. If you are dissatisfied with some particular activity, or if you have sug-The month of November is a reminder of the holidays ahead. Election Day is over and the traditional Thanksgiving rivalry in football will soon be history. As the festive season approaches at Branch 27-V, Toledo, our Chairman, Agnes Mokri, is planning a gala Christmas party for the children of the branch. The party is to be held on December 21 at Collins Park Shelter House. We would like to make it clear that all children who are policy holders in good standing are invited to attend this party. After the party, refreshments will be served to the adult members. Branch 27-V is planning on having a large group of youngsters attending. On January 31, Saturday evening, a dance is planned and is to be held in St. Stephen’s School basement with Steve Szabó and his orchestra playing beautiful music for your dancing pleasure. Plan on these social events for both your child and for your friends. Betty and Steve Kandik, of Rossford, spent their vacation this year in Phoenix, Arizona. Betty brought some cactus plants that grow cactus pears. They just couldn’t describe the beauty of the western part of the country enough. This adds up to one thing: “Go west, young man.” Paul Lajti, Jr. came home welltanned after his yearly cruise down, the Caribbean. The William Penn Mixed League is doing quite well with plenty of fine scores. Brother John came through with a fine 639 which included a high 247 game, and his wife Maryanne, a first year bowler, bowled a 149 game. The Push-Ups are in first place with the rest of the teams right behind them. Hospitalized Members of Branch 27-V: Stephen Kinsey is recovering at St. Charles Hospital, Joseph Sofalvi, at St. Charles also, tells me that every time Oscar Kinsey goes to see his Dad, he has a good story to tell them all. This must be a change in Oscar for his interests are strictly “dead issues.” Mrs. Ida Kovács and Mrs. Paul Belegrin are home convalescing after a stay in St. Vincent’s. Mrs. Elizabeth Kocsis is also home after being in St. Charles. At this writing, Mrs. Helen Smith is in Mercy Hospital, and probably no bowling for a while. A speedy recovery to all. Stork News: Mr. and Mrs. John Vaskó, Jr., a girl; and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Cherko are the proud parents of a boy. Congratulations! Bob Nickel told me how to roll a high score in bowling. This concerns Dick Roach. Dick was asked to sub in a league, but he showed up at the wrong house. Realizing his error, gestions for a wider and more diversified program, the annual meeting is the time to bring these ideas to the attention of the membership. LET’S HAVE THE BIGGEST MEETING IN YEARS . .. don’t let the language barrier stop you from participating in the most important meeting of the year! * ¥ * Sorry — space, you know! Look for the December issue for the election results. Happy Thanksgiving to all — and to all, a reason for thankfulness. Your old FERRET 12996 Rosedale Wyandotte (Southgate), Michigan AVenue 3-0905 Dick hurried to the house across town and proceeded to blast the maples for a plus 650. Dick Roach ia manager of ithe Roach Rest Home here in Toledo. Both he and his wife, Lois, are ardent bowlers. They sponsor men’s and women’s teams in leagues, also. It is nice to have these two fine people as members of Branch 27-V in Toledo. Joe Hornyak, our “Bob Turley” in bowling, really blazed the pins over recently — a 655 total. This entitles Joe for some “All Star” recognition. Bob Nickel shot ‘a 300 game in the Swayne Field Classic while bowling on the Roach Rest Home team. This perfect game gave Bob some financial awards for he had on a King Louis shirt and Kegler Trousers. Congratulations, Bob N ickel! Some high scores last month: Bob Nickel: 789, at Pappas Memorial League, John “Good Looking” Mondky, 746 in the Times Classic; Rollie Schmidt, 731 in the Times Classic; Junior Powell, 709 Lengel Classic; Dick Sendi, 701 at Lengel Classic; Walter Johnson, 676 at Lengel Classic; Bill Smith, 658 in Times Classic; Bob Lorensen, 656 in Times Classic; Sherm Conrad, 657 at the Pappas Memorial. Among the feminine bowlers, Zeke Killel has a 625 at the Marathon Classic;; Verdis Stephens, 604 at Marathon Classic; Betty Bochi, 578 at Van’s Major; Hazel Vischer, 567 Marathon Classic; and Lois Roach, 548 at the Marathon Classics. Grand shooting and we hope you can repeat next year in the William Penn National Tournament. There is a fine group of women bowling at the Rumpus Room Lanes — they’re from the St. Stephen’s Mothers Club — some of these ladies are members of Branch 27-V. We would like to report, ladies, if you read this column, that if all of you were members you could enter our national tournaments. High scorer for the league is Irene Bertok; high single game is Mary Ivancso with 187. Let’s bowl, girls! Some birthdays came to my mind in closing: A grand lady in Windber, Pennsylvania. She’s proud to admit that she’s past 70 and I’m proud to tell you that she’s my mother-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Krempasky, who celebrates her birthday on November 11. Mi's. Ida Kovács had a nice get-together and celebrated both her birthday and wedding anniversary. Mrs. Pearl Molnár has a birthday this month and celebrated her anniversary in October. Congratulations to you all. As we approach Thanksgiving, we wish you all a fine family get-together. Let’s give thanks to the Almighty God for the wonderful freedom He has given us in these United States. If you’re driving, please be careful, have a safe return home.
