PAGE 8 December 18, 1957. William Penn Jubilee Celebrated by Branch 71-V MERGER NOTED; AWARDS MADE A In 1907 the economic situa­tion in The United States was a bleak one. Unemployment was great, particularly in the Pittsburgh area where many Hungarians were steel workers and coal miners. But the un­pleasant work picture did not nor could not deter the Hun­garians of the City of Du­­quesne, Pennsylvania from joining in a fraternal union It was in that year, 1907, fifty years ago, that Branch 71-V, Duquesne, Pennsylvania, came into being. So it was fitting, a half cen­tury later, for this branch and its members to celebrate the Branch 71-V jubilee with a banquet held on Sunday, No­vember 17, 1957, at 6:30 in the evening in the spacious Duke Restaurant near famous Ken­­nvwood Park. Nearly four hundred guests attended the affair. At this event four veteran members and officers were pre­sented with the WILLIAM PENN Illustrious Citation and Gold Medal, and the 1957 merger of Branches 71-V and 112-R was observed. Branch 71-V president Ste­phen Szabó called upon Na­tional President Coloman Ré­vész to act as toastmaster, and the National President’s ac­ceptance signaled the opening of the program. As is done at all WILLIAM PENN banquets, the National Anthem was sung. Margaret Kreinar sang and was accom­panied by Joseph Baldwin’s orchestra. The Rev. Louis Minya, pastor of St. Mary’s Greek Rite Cath­olic Church, said grace. A delicious Hungarian meal, featuring stuffed cabbage at­tested to the culinary abilities of the good women of Branch 71-V. Vocalizations by Miss Kreinar and (the music of the Baldwin orchestra added zest to the banquet:. First speaker called upon by toastmaster Revesz was Na­tional Secretary Albert J. Stel­­kovics. Mr. Stelkovics gave an interesting talk lauding the branch on its anniversary and recalling the splendid work of the «branch officers. He re­viewed the two Branches 71-V and 112-R which merged to form the new Branch 71-V. Next Theresa and Joseph Czemai, children of Director and Mrs. Gabriel Czernai, sang Hungarian tunes and danced skillfully. Much applause and encore. State Senator Frank Kopri­­ver, Mayor of Duquesne, added his congratulations and words of praise for Branch 71-V, sash­ing that this branch has play­ed an important role in the civic and social life of the com­munity. Father Minya, only a few months in America, was both philosophical and humorous as he too honored Duquesne’s Branch 71-V. The pastor was followed by Dr. Harold S. Konvalinka, Superintendent of the Du­quesne Public Schools, who credited the Hungarians with qdding much to the fields of education, music and science. He urged Hungarian parents to teach their children the Ma­­gyai; language since language is a major asset to culture. The superintendent made known that he was quite proud of his part Hungarian blood. At this point the toastmaster introduced the following guests: Mrs. Albert J. Stelko­vics, wife of the National Sec­retary; National Auditor and Mrs. John Sabo; Field Manager Elmer Charles; Dr. Samuel C. Gomory, WILLIAM PENN Me­dical Adviser; Gay B. Banes, WILLIAM PENN Legal Ad­viser; Directors John Balia, Gabriel Czemai and Julius J. Len art, who were accompanied by their wives; William C. Ko­­hut, Secretary of the Auditing- Committee; Field Supervisor and Mrs. Gus G. Nagy; District Managers Peter A. Walkö, Jr., Fred J. Stipkovics and Louis J. Jardanhazy, and their wives; Mrs. Stephen Szabó, wife of the branch president; Mrs. Nicho­las Hleba and Miss Margaret Evans, Home Office employees; Walter Weir, Chief of Police; Frank Gregis and Murt Sha­­ughnessv, Undertakers. The following sent represent­atives: Duquesne City Bank, First National Bank, the Greek Rite Catholic Church, the Re­formed Church, the East Pitts­burgh Singing Society, the Du­quesne Self-Culture Society, Pittsburgh Branch 34-V, Home­stead Branch 89-V and Mc­Keesport Branch 226-V. Mr. Re vesz nex!!; introduced these branch officers: Branch 71-V — Stephen Szabó, president: Michael Illés, vice president; Stephen Illés, treasurer; Andrew Mitrik, con­troller. Former Branch 112-R — Matthew Kalló, president; Francis Wagner, secretary­­treasurer; John Kish, recording­­secretary; Gabriel Czernai, con­troller; Mrs. John Horvath, sick visitor; Mrs. Valentine Viszlai, delegate to the Grand Committee. At this point toastmaster Ré­vész gave praise to District Manager Walko, manager of Branch 71- V, for his fine work as organizer and his efforts to assure the success of the ju­bilee. Now Branch 71-V president Stephen Szabó reviewed the history of Duquesne’s 50 year old branch and he thanked the guests for their kind attention. Very inspirational part of the program was its conclud­ing act, 'the award of the Il­lustrious Citation and Gold Medal to the four branch of­ficers. Stephen Szabó and Ste­phen Illés received their awards from Director Julius J. Lenart, while Andrew Nagy, only living­­charter member of Branch 71- V, and John Fedor were pre-The bowling league’s chicken tsupper held Saturday, November 30th, was a big success. Thanks to all who attended and supported the affair. ❖ * ❖ Branch 296-V’s annual Children’s Christmas Party will be held Sun­day, December 22d, at 2:00 P.M. This party is for the children of all beneficial and social members. In­dications are that it will be the best yet.. Santa Claus will be on hand to pass out treats to the children. Alex Sarkardy and Joseph llamorsky are in charge of the party. ❖ sfc * Don’t forget to make plans for the gala New Year’s Eve Party. In order to satisfy different tastes, two orchestras have been engaged. In the upper ball room will be Arthur Nagy and his orchestra and in the Social Quarters will be a modern dance orchestra. There will be hats and favors for all. Kolbász and sauerkraut will be served. As in the past, due to the extremely heavy expenses on such a night, a charge of $1.50 per per­son wil be made at the door. Tables, will be on a first-come-first-served basis, so plan to come early. * * * The annual election of branch of­ficers was held Sunday, December 8th ,with the following members elected: John P. Balia, President; Julius Telegdy, Vice-President; Howard ‘ Howie”. Reed, Treasurer ;Edward A. Mattie, Secretary; Stephen Üve­ges, Sr., Controller; Joseph Hamor­­sky, Steve Üveges, Jr., Bob Charles, and Russell Miller, Trustees; Joseph Szalai, Mrs. Helen Dudzinski, Mrs. Mary Wesoloski, and Mrs. Margaret Kosheba, Auditors. Serving as trustees with unexpired terms are: Emery Szalai, William Mattie, Alex Sarkady and Joseph Barta. ❖ * ❖ There must be something special about bowling for the second set of twins has been born to a member of our bowling league. First there was the Nick Polombos with a daughter and son. And now the Alex Toasos have come through with sented their awards by Director Gabriel Czernai, member of the branch. The recipients were moved and expressed their appreciation upon being con­gratulated by the two Di­rectors. In his final words, toast­master Revesz, our National President, reminded his audi­ence that Thanksgiving was theirs but not in possession of the suffering Hungarians. He begged his listeners to con­tinue sending aid to their brethren overseas. The Hungarian National An­them concluded the program. We congratulate Branch 71- V, Duquesne, Pennsylvania, on its 50th anniversary. twin sons. Congratulations! * * * Congratulations also to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Tar pay on the birth of their son. They have named him Frank Charles. Congratulations and best wishes to Abel Novak and Jo-Ann Hilliard who became Mr. and Mrs. on Oc­tober 26th. Also, the same to Mary Üveges and Joseph Antonio who ex­changed vows on October 12th. $ * * A number of deaths have taken place during the past few months. So we would like to extend our sym­pathies and condolences to the family of Mrs. Joseph Magyar w'ho passed away on October 25th ... to Mrs. Joseph Witucki and Emma Miklós upon the passing of their father, Steve Miklós . to the family of Stephen Hegedűs, Sr., who passed away on November 11th after a brief illness ... to John Chovan upon the passing away of his mefcher in Warren, Ohio. Mr .and Mrs. Chovan flew in from Fontana, California ...
