May 16, 1956. William Penn PAGE 7 Verhovay Watchtower s «■ By JOSEPH J, HORVATH Cleveland, Ohio We do not know at this writing how we made out in the Primary. Articles for the WILLIAM PENN must be in fairly early, so we shall make our election announcement in the June issue. Nevertheless, many thanks to our members for their support, and, win or lose, I am deeply appreciative. We wish to congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Szalay of Branch 14 on their 50 years of marriage. Reception in their honor was at Verhovay William Penn, Hall on May 6. The card party of Branch 366, held on April 14, was highly successful. Door prices were distributed. More important, good will prevailed. Also, a substantial profit was shown from the March 17 card party sponsored by the Sports Club. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE COMMITTEE. We heard that Frank Oravis broke his ankle . . . We saw Joseph Barry, Sr. hard at work at the Branch 45 meeting . . . Sigismund Kadar is looking for a home on the West Side . . . Joseph Hegedűs was reported very sick at the latest meeting of Branch 14 . . . Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Gall did very well at the Szabolcs megye card party, as did vice president Joseph Semetko . . . Joseph Kovach, former secretary of Branch 14, has five sons who are all voters ... Bert Szilagyi’s broken leg hospitalized him . . . Joseph Szalay is Sheriff Sweeny’s chief Hungarian deputy . . . Denis Szász of Branch 62-R loves lodge work . . . Joseph M. Toth was master of ceremonies at St. John’s Greek Catholic Sick Benefit Society’s card party and did an excellent job . . . Steve '‘Burma Shorts” Piscalko says he is falling on his bowling average, doing only 190 now. We like campaigning with Judge Joseph Stearns who opens doors where common state representatives like myself would have to pound. Judge Louis Petrash is preparing for his reelection next year. Councilwoman Mary K. Sotak of Cleveland’s 29th ward is a staunch Lausche supporter. Zoltán Gombos, editor of the Szabadság, is another Lausche supporter. We thank Mr. Gombos for his kind editorial about Joseph J. Horvath for state representative. The annual card party of the “Öreg Amerikás” was well attended on April 22 at the West Side Lutheran Church. Coloman Kolozsvary, former Verhovay Director, gave an inspiring talk, then turned over the microphone to Andrew Dono, President and Secretary of the United Hungarian Societies of Cleveland, who conducted with alertness and finesse the remainder of the program. Many William Penn members are affiliated with this organization. The St. Stephen Choir of St. Margaret’s Church celebrated its 25th anniversary April 29 with High Mass and a banquet. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. John Weizer on their 50th wedding anniversary. Their daughter and their son-in-law arranged a banquet and a dance in their honor. Ann and Tony Pinter were very busy that evening. We saw Mrs. Mary Bodnar and her son Jim with his wife and children. About three hundred fifty guests attended this grand affair. Frank Szabó, superintendent of the county yards, was in Florida for about five weeks. He said he had met many members and Clevelanders there. Frank is a picture of health and has a conspicious coat of tan. We heard that George Bubonic won the Sports Club bowling trophy, that Melvina Hegedűs was the woman winner. Congratulations to both of them. The delicious turkey for the bowling party was prepared by Betty Knapp. We wish every William Penn member a pleasant spring and enjoyable vacations this summer. Concluding this article, my thanks to the Home Office for running my picture in the previous column. Ex animo, JOSEPH J. HORVATH c. o.
