Branch News assistant chief elder of the First Hungarian Reformed Church of Homestead while providing moral support to Branch Secretary-Treasurer Ruth Toth as she battles Alzheimers. He's a true class act if there ever was one and well deserving of this award. As WPA Medical Director Dr. Michael Finikiotis said, "John is about one of the nicest people out there." Branch 89 totally agrees, and we know his predecessor, his uncle Elmer Toth, is very proud of how he has stepped up. Tom Kazar, a member of WPA and owner of Dorothy 6 Blast Furnace Café, was planning to host another Hungarian Night at his restaurant on Aug. 31, complete with the musical accompaniment of George Bátyi. Come check out Dorothy 6 on 8th Avenue in Homestead, even if it's not on one of the Hungarian Nights. Get well wishes continue to go to branch members George Rostival, Mark Maskarinec, Janet J. and Rudy Phillips, Jim Findlay (as he continues his battle with cancer) and Justin Toth. Branch 89 is sad to report the sudden and unexpected death of our branch mascot, Baron Leo DeGoofus Toth. He led a good life and provided countless support to many. He will be missed. And here's a story that was told to me by another member of our branch. Connor Langan, one of our younger members, was talking to our branch president about the upcoming golf outing. He said to John, "I'm really proud to be a Member of Branch 89," to which John replied, "Why do you say that?" Connor replied,"because when Unc ran the branch, he had things going on. But he died, and you stepped in with Cousin Lisa—it is okay for me to call her that, isn't it?- and both of you always have something going on in our branch. And I like that. And you know, Uncle Elmer was still my Unc, and he would be proud of all you're doing." My response was, "wow!" To hear words like this coming from a young person in this day and age truly is something. It puts everything in perspective. Take care and make every day count. Do something nice for someone and see how good you will feel. It takes more energy to complain about something than it does to correct the problem. Fraternalism is the key! Let's make it count. Branch 129 Columbus, OH by Debra A. Lewis Hello, all! Well, we have finally made it to September. This month marks the end of summer with pools closing, kids going back to school and the last of summer picnics being held. Hope everyone had a great summer. This month's important dates include: Labor Day (Sept. 3), Grandparents Day (Sept. 9), Patriot Day (Sept. 11) and the beginning of fall (Sept. 23). Congratulations to all those student members who received a scholarship grant this year from the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation. We encourage all our members and friends to please consider donating to this great program that supports the continued education of our young members. The WPA Tour 2018 to Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia and Venice is scheduled for Sept. 25 to Oct. 11. We wish safe travels to all those participating in this great trip. We can hardly wait to see all your pictures and hear all your stories about your experiences in Europe. Our next branch meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Plank's Café, located at 743 Parsons Ave., Columbus, beginning at 4:00 p.m. We will be discussing plans for our annual branch family Christmas party. Branch 132 South Bend, IN by John E. Burus Summer seems to be almost over; how could it go by so fast? Before you know it, football season will be here. Go, Irish! The garden has been very good to us this year as the paprika (sweet and hot) harvest has been plentiful. I would also like to wish all a happy and safe Labor Day.
