Dayton Magyars gather for dining and dancing by Anne Marie Schmidt DAYTON, OH -- Congratulations to the Magyar Club of Dayton on the success of their spring dinner dance held April 29 at the American-Czechoslovakian Club in Dayton. It was a sellout! The evening started with a warm tribute to Magyar Club President and WPA Branch 249 President Michele Daley-LaFlame who had passed away just days earlier on April 27. Her presence was deeply missed, but her spirit was profoundly felt throughout the event as the guests celebrated her great dedication to our Hungarian culture. A delicious Hungarian buffet dinner was served with kolbász, chicken paprikás, nokedli (dumplings), cabbage rolls, paprika potatoes, salad and wonderful homemade Hungarian pastries donated by the members. The preparation of this fine meal began days earlier as members gathered to cook and bake. The Dayton Festival Club dancers (pictured belozo) performed, delighting everyone with the Üveges (the traditional "Hungarian Bottle Dance") and the ever-engaging Csárdás. The dancers were also to perform at the end of May at the World A'Fair International Festival at the Dayton Convention Center. An evening of dancing continued with primas George Bátyi and the Gypsy Strings Orchestra, featuring cimbalom player Alex Udvary. We are blessed to be entertained by these world renowned, gifted musicians. This gala event would not be possible without the joint effort of the entire Dayton Hungarian community. We thank our Magyar Club officers and members for their many volunteer hours to make this dance a success. We also thank the Dayton Festival Club, Old Troy Pike Community Church, William Penn Association Branch 249 and the many sponsors who contributed to the beautiful ad booklet designed by Gail (Sloboda) Robison, Magyar Club secretary. Special thanks to William Penn Association and Fraternal Director Barbara Ann House for their generous donations.
