Fresh fruit baby food and formula donated by Branch I were delivered to the United Congregational Church Food Pantry as part ofWPA's Join Hands Against Hunger campaign.

Branch 1 Bridgeport, CT

Our branch participated in WPA's Join Hands Against Hunger campaign by collecting and donating items to the food pantry at the United Congregational Church.

We donated about $115 worth of fresh fruit, baby food and formula. The pantry provides daily cooked meals and other services to those in need.

Our thanks to Sandy Stasko, Bill Bero, James Balias and Ann Balias for helping to make this project a success. We also thank WPA for coordinating this campaign to help those in need.

Branch 8 Johnstown, PA

by Alexis Yuhas Kozak Branch 8 joined in WPA's Join Against Hunger campaign. This year's recipient was the Johnstown Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army, an evangelic part of the universal Christian church established in 1865, has been supporting those in need in His name without discrimination for 130 years in the United States. The Johnstown Chapter has both a food pantry and food kitchen which serves hot food every day. God bless them for their missions.

We send a very big thank you to Barbara House and Ursula Markovits for their gracious hospitality at the White Rose Ball. These two lovely ladies always make us feel like we are at home and are part of the wonderful Michigan Branch 18. The Friday night dinner was scrumptious; the benefactor reception, divine. The White Rose Ball was grandiose.

A special get well blessing goes to Ursula along with wishes for a speedy recovery after her surgery. Better get that knee in good shape for the Hungarian Heritage Experience. David is counting on you, Ursula.

WOW! Winter is almost over.

The tulips and daffodils are already peeking out. This means the busy times are upon us: bowling tournament, April 28 and 29; golfing in Blairsville, Pa., July 7 and 8; Hungarian Heritage Experience, Aug. 6 to 12; and the WPA Picnic in Hiram, Ohio, Aug. 26. Stay tuned for information about our annual Branch 8 Bacon Roast.

So, keep hope alive for the arrival of spring and the departure of the snowy, cold days of winter.

The Cleveland Hungarian Development Panel (CHDP) hosted the 27th annual Paprika! Bál on March 4 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Cleveland. WPA was well-represented at this event. For more on the ball, see Magyar Matters on page 9.

I also attended the Buckeye Road Reunion Cabin Fever Party on Feb. 25.1 was a resident of 11410 Buckeye Road for 25 years, living in the heart of the Hungarian neighborhood. What a great place to live and grow up! Hungarian was spoken in the streets, stores, bakeries, butcher shops and churches. Little nénis (aunts) with their wire shopping carts and their scarfs; bácsis (uncles) meeting friends on the streets.

I remember walking along Buckeye Road in the evening, tending the Harvey Rice school garden and my summer garden, and attending fall festivals, parades and Hungarian dances.

What a great time! I would not have changed a thing.

In my travels to Hungary, I have seen where many of our traditions originated, traditions still in practice on Buckeye Road. The reunion group maintains contact with their followers via electronic media. The reunion gives all a chance to reminisce about the old neighborhood. Several of us were interviewed and our comments were posted on the Buckeye Road Reunion website.

There will be a picnic at the Hungarian Cultural Center of Northeastern Ohio in Hiram, on June 11, where more stories of the old days will be shared.

Congratulations and best wishes to our new Branch 14 Auditors Frank War go and Brian Bowens, who were elected at a special election March 1. We look forward to working with you in the spirit of fraternalism.
