Branch News hear Hungarian tunes echoing through the building. People were dancing on the dance floor and enjoying great Hungarian food. Children played games in the backyard. There was face painting and prizes. We had folks come from as far away as Dayton, Cincinnati and Beaver Falls, Pa., attend the festival. Endre Csornán, national vice president-fraternal, made our gulyás again. It was enjoyed by all. The menu also included homemade cabbage rolls, kolbász, cabbage and noodles and Hungarian pastries. Many thanks to all the volunteers who made the festival a huge success. It couldn't have been done without all of you. The Cultural Association is continuing its Sunday soup and learn program. It is held after the 10:00 a.m. service on the second Sunday of each month. Upcoming topics include "Travels in Transylvania" on Sept. 12 and "Starting Over in America" on Oct. 10. Also, please remember the 1956 commemorative service and dinner to be held Oct. 24. If any of the programs interest you, the soup and learn programs are held at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Columbus. If you have any news to share, please call Árpád Sibrik at 614-231- 8024 or write to him at 645 S. Kellner Road, Columbus, OH 43209. Branch 132 South Bend, IN by the Officers of Branch 132 On July 25, Branch 132 held its picnic at Potawatomi Park. It was a pleasant day with temperatures in the 80s and no humidity, one of the best days of the summer. We had a great turn out. It was great to see all the Bralicks, the two Lillians (Buti and Moore), Rita and Jim Berta, John Burus and his three sons with their families, Theresa and Ervin Nowaczewksi, the Czajkowski family, Marshalls, Helen Pécsi and a lot of Horvaths. The food was delicious and a great time was had by all. Happy birthday to all celebrating this month, including Christine Bralick, Mary Bralick, Tony Czajkowski, Don Czajkowski and Lillian Moore, Sharon Hoover carries yellow roses in honor of her late twin sister, Karen Dallas, during Branch 189’s first Cancer and Heart Disease benefit. The event raised more than $3,000. to name a few. Be careful around school areas as our children are back in school. A speedy recovery to Rita Berta who had knee replacement surgery. Lillian Buti is still recovering from her surgery, as well. Our next meeting will be held Tuesday, Oct. 12, at Martins Supermarket Cafe on Ireland Road. Branch 189 Alliance, OH by Sherry Moore What a beautiful summer this has been. Hope everyone is enjoying it, because in a few short months it will be winter again. Our two golf teams really enjoyed the WPA golf tournament this year. They didn't win any money, but some of our gang won several prizes at the Chinese auction and Monte Carlo Night. We hope to do this again next year. Maybe next time we won't lose "Jim" the night before the golf game. Our steak and fish fries are starting next month. I think everyone has been waiting for this. We've had a lot of birthdays recently, and there are quite a few this month, too. Our president, Mark Moore, has a birthday this month, as do Mark Smith, Mike Delane and Nancy Brimlow. A very special event was held on Aug. 14. It was our first Cancer and Heart Disease Benefit in memory of Karen Hoover Dallas. Our manager, Tracy Hurst, put a lot of time into making this a great day. We had lots of good food that everyone helped make. A special thank you goes out to Wanda and Pam for helping us set up things. A Chinese auction was held with 23 baskets up for grabs. There was a 50/50 raffle and coupons for local restaurants. Yellow roses were available to purchase in honor of those lost to or still battling cancer or heart disease. But the most fun was provided by the "pie in the face." Guests could make bids to earn the chance to throw whipped cream pies into the faces of some of our members, including Tracy Hurst, Bob (our vice president), Mark (our president) and even Carol, one of the beverage servers, who wore a yellow table cloth to keep her shirt clean. Everyone had a great time with this, and the pie throwing raised $1,180. Yellow roses and a plaque were presented to Karen's husband Mike Dallas and to her sister, Sharon Hoover. We were very fortunate to raise more than $3,000 which will go to the Alliance Visiting Nurses and to cancer and heart disease organizations. Our good thoughts go out to everyone who is ill, and to all those I forget to mention. Until next time, stay healthy and happy and enjoy the rest of your summer. Branch 296 Springdale, PA by Patty Balia Branch 296 will resume its monthly meetings on Thursday, Sept. 9, at 7:30 p.m. at Kings Family Restaurant in New Kensington, Pa. You probably will be reading this article right around the time of the WPA Picnic at Scenic View. I am sure it will be a huge success, as it always is. Thank you to all the people that prepare the food and work hard to make it such a successful fraternal event. William Penn Life 0 September 2010 0 21
