Charitable Ideas P&cttn OOWlfoiy, <0^ Member combines faith and fraternalism on mission RICHMOND, VA — Faith, it is said, can move mountains. Through fraternalism, we join hands to touch lives. Imagine what can be accomplished when we combine the forces of faith and fraternalism. This August, a group of volunteers from the Richmond area caught a glimpse of that potential. WPA member Marty Malloy of Richmond joined 22 members and friends of the city's West End Presbyterian Church on a weeklong mission to Nicaragua. The purpose of the trip was to assist the Verbo Church and Casa Bemabe Orphanage in the town of Vera Cruz. Thanks to the financial support of WPA and others, the mission team accomplished an amazing amount in just seven days. According to Marty, the volunteers: • Constructed a brand new playground for the Christian school, Colegio Verbo, that caters to the orphans at Casa Bernabe and other impoverished children in nearby areas; • Conducted soccer camps and vacation bible schools for the orphans at Casa Bernabe and in two other very impoverished areas in Nicaragua; • Partnered with the Verbo Church to feed more than 250 children that live with their families in a trash dump; and • Reconstructed a large greenhouse and installed a new water pump which will allow the orphanage to grow tomatoes not only for themselves but also to sell at local markets. "I wish to extend my sincere thanks for the generous support that William Penn Association provided for the mission trip," Marty wrote in a letter of thanks to WPA National President George S. Charles Jr. "The Verbo Church is doing fantastic things in Nicaragua to spread the Gospel and help others in need. It was an honor to serve alongside the Church during our week in Nicaragua. It is hard to fully express my gratitude of William Penn's support." □ William Penn Life 0 October 2010 0 5
