Branch 800 Altoona, PA by Vincent Frank Happy Mother's Day on Sunday, May 10. May the good Lord bless all mothers, especially on this day set aside to honor and thank all of our mothers for the many joys that you bring to our families. Memorial Day will be observed on May 25. It's a day to honor those Americans who died defending our nation and it's values. While we should honor those heroes every day, we should pay them special honor on Memorial Day. To our men and women in uniform—past, present and future—may God bless you and, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Branch 800 meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month from September through May at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Educational Center in Altoona. All members are most welcome to attend. Happy birthday greetings go out to Regis Ball of Altoona who is celebrating 85 years this May. Regis tells me that he enjoys good health. Here we are at the month of May and time to start thinking about summer vacations. Branch 8114 Clarion, PA by Noreen Fritz, FIC, LUTCF It was very sad to hear of the sudden loss of member Veronica "Noni" Huefner. Our deepest sympathy to her family. Their sorrow is shared by everyone who knew and loved Noni. Do you know that Clarion has a super hero? His name is Kevin Slike, an officer of Branch 8114. Kevin is completely devoted to helping others. Kevin drives his neighbors to their doctor's appointments, shopping, hair appointments and anywhere else they can't make it on their own. Lately, he has been delivering daffodils for the Cancer Society. The flowers are purchased by the people and businesses of Clarion, and Kevin delivers them. The proceeds go to the Cancer Society. Kevin has been helping others for years. He is truly a blessing to many people. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Schmader on their new great grandchild, Samantha Rhoads, and congratulations to us for having a new little member. Mother's Day is a day for honoring and thanking our mothers for giving us life, raising us, loving us and being the truest friend we could ever have. This is a loving Happy Mother's Day wish for all the mothers reading this. Please keep in your prayers Bill Rice, son of Gordon and Dottie Rice. Branch 8121 _ St. Marys, PA by Mary Lou Schutz At our first meeting of the year on April 1, we were honored to have as our guests National Vice President- Fraternal Endre Csornán and his wife Arlene. Mr. Csornán explained some of the programs offered by the WPA that would be beneficial to our branch and our members. We were happy to spend the evening with him and his wife, reminiscing about the activities of the branch. We were saddened by the loss of two of our members earlier this year: Marinus Bobenrieth, a longtime and active member; and Elizabeth (Betty) Emmert, who was a charter member of Ladies Branch 8126 and then a member of Branch 8121. Betty continued to serve in the office of branch auditor until poor health made it impossible for her to attending meetings. We were happy to see the "thank you" letter that was published in the March issue of the William Penn Life, written by member Melinda Marconi thanking the WPA for the surprise Christmas gift and for her scholarship grant. She wrote of her younger brother's enjoyment with the glitter light that was given by the WPA to young members at Christmastime. William Penn Life, May 2009 17
