25th Annual Golf Tournament Our golfers and guests enjoyed a delicious meal featuring barbequed chicken and ribs during the Golf Awards Barbeque held on the grounds of the Dauphin Highlands Golf Course immediately following the conclusion of tournament play. Winners of the Fraternal Prize Drawing-Grace Matlock and WPA Sales Director Mark Lantz-are flanked by tournament co-administrators Andrew W. McNelis (far left) and Roger G. Nagy. Both winners received a $2,000 paid-up WPA life insurance certificate. random with each winning a smaller cash prize: Dennis Chobody ($100), Charles Oravitz ($75) and Mark Schmidt ($50). The other big unclaimed prize was the $2,500 which would have been awarded for sinking a 50- foot putt during the awards barbeque, held at the course immediately following tournament play. The one lucky member whose name was drawn for this contest, Steve Horvath, gave it a good shot, but his putt went left of the hole. Golfers and non-golfing guests all had a chance to win some of the other valuable prizes offered during the weekend. Winners of the Scholarship Benefit Raffle were Stan Varner ($1,000), Jeff Turns ($500) and Tara Seretti ($250). A golf getaway weekend for two at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort was won by Sam Weyant. Grace Matlock and WPA Sales Director Mark Lantz won the Fraternal Prize Drawing, with each receiving a $2,000 paid-up WPA life insurance certificate. Of course, the weekend's biggest winners were not in attendance. Those would be the young WPA members who will receive scholarship grants from the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation. For all the weekend's activities benefited the Scholarship Foundation. In fact, the weekend raised a total of $20,475 for the foundation. Most of that total—$11,005—was raised through donations, the majority of which were made during the annual meeting of the Foundation held at the Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey Hotel on Friday evening. The remainder of the funds were raised through tournament hole sponsors ($6,025), the benefit raffle ($3,246), Friday evening's putting contest ($160) and the Golfer's Challenge on the practice green Saturday morning ($39). The success of this year's tournament was made possible through the hard work and dedication of many people. Our thanks and appreciation go to the National Officers; the Home Office staff; tournament co-administrators Robert A. Ivancso, Andrew W. McNelis and Roger G. Nagy; our hole spotters; and the staff and management of Dauphin Highlands Golf Course and the Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey Hotel. We look forward to greeting everyone again at next year's tournament. |wpl| William Penn Life, August 2008 9
