Branch 800 Altoona, PA by Vincent Frank Happy Mother's Day on Sunday, May 11. How could we ever forget our moms? Those who have deceased mothers remember how our eyes filled with tears and sorrow, for it seemed as if we had lost everything. So, mothers, you should know how much you are loved. Branch 800 meets on the first Tuesday of each month from September through May at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Education Center in Altoona. All members are welcome to attend. This Memorial Day, May 26, Americans will pause to honor the men and women who have given their lives for their country and for each and every one of us. They were asked to serve, and we must remember their sacrifices. Our fervent prayer this Memorial Day is that God will watch over those who serve us as the war on terrorism continues. Remember in your prayers our branch members or family members who are ill. You can bet that they are very appreciative of our not forgetting them. It is hoped that the coming summer months will be a little brighter for them. Birthday greetings this May to the following branch members, all of whom are enjoying life:- Pauline Mueller, 90, of Ida Towers in Altoona. She enjoys good health and loves to play cards at the Towers.- William Kormos, 85, of Newry, Pa. Bill is in good health, collects stamps, walks, belongs to the Lions Club and attends Altoona Curve baseball games.- Joyce Steinbauer, 65, of Altoona. She is in pretty good health and enjoys watching television, reading, and going to Altoona Curve games. As the month of May arrives, many families begin to make plans for summer vacation. Branch 8121 St. Marys, PA by Mary Lou Schutz At our April branch meeting, we received a thank you from the Christian Food Bank for our Christmas donation. We also received information about Join Hands Day. We won't be able to participate, however, our branch did make a donation to the St. Mary's Catholic Elementary and Middle School's $1 million endowed scholarship matching challenge. If the schools raise $1 million, a couple has pledged to match it with another $1 million donation. As part of the WPA's effort to support local food banks, our branch will make a donation to the Christian Food Bank here. As there are so few members attending our monthly meetings, it has been decided to meet at the homes of branch officers. The annex building where we currently meet is often not available. It will be more convenient for members to gather at the homes of our officers. Branch 8121 was invited to attend a get together of various organizations active in St. Mary's Church. Branch President Mary Lou Schutz attended the event April 3. The church's pastor used the event to get acquainted with the organizations and their programs. Articles and photographs for the June 2008 issue of the William Penn Life are due in our office by May 10, 2008.
