Longtime Branch 296 member John Simon (right) and National Director Ronald J. Balia were among the many branch members who attended the WPA Picnic-A Great Fraternal Fest. Branch 249 Dayton, OH by Anne Marie Schmidt Congratulations to the local Hungarian groups in Dayton for utilizing their resources for a very successful Hungarian Grape Festival Dance (Szüreti Bal). We extend a special thank you to our friends from Columbus, Ohio, and other surrounding cities for traveling to Dayton to participate in this traditional fall event. I had the privilege of attending the 100th anniversary of the Darr Mine disaster in Rostraver, Pa. A very memorable tribute was given to the 239 men and teenage boys who lost their lives that day. It was good to see the Rev. Gabor and Helen Nitsch again, who are settling in at their new position at the Bethlen Home in Ligonier, Pa. Our next branch meeting will be held on Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Stephen's Church Hall. We will hold our election of officers for 2008 at this meeting and will finalize plans for the Christmas party. The Old Troy Pike Community Church will be having their annual Christmas Bazaar on Nov. 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Nov. 10 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will be food available to purchase and many holiday gift items. On Nov. 30 St. Stephen's Catholic Church will have its homemade Hungarian sausage sale and ChristBranch News mas Bazaar. There will be Christmas crafts, flea market items, csiga, cabbage rolls and sausage sandwiches for sale. Please call Michele Daley-LaFlame at 937-278-5970 to place your sausage order. The Magyar Club of Dayton will be having its annual Christmas dinner at The Barnsider Restaurant on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 1:00 p.m. Please contact Anne Marie Schmidt at 937- 667-1211 for information and reservations. The WPA Branch 249 Christmas party will be held on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Stephen's Church Hall. This is always a festive family affair, and we look forward to sharing it with our members. Branch 296 Springdale, PA by Diane M. Torma Happy Anniversary on Nov. 26 to George and Irene Charles. Hope you have many more to come. The Branch 296 annual children's Christmas party is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 9 at noon at the Springdale VFW. Hope to see you there. Happy Thanksgiving! Branch 590 Cape Coral, FL by Joan Mauerman Branch 590 held a picnic Oct. 4 at Harbor View Yacht Pavilion. We had a turnout of 40 people. The weather was perfect with a slight breeze off the river. There was plenty of food, including a bacon fry, diós törte and chocolate ice cream. Hungarian music filled the air. Door prize winners were Eleanor Di Giulio, Kalman Nagy, Helen Toth, Julie Nagy and Eugene Toth. Yolan Michla received flowers for her birthday. Frank Dobos was the winner of the bingo cover-all. Joan Mauerman won the "bean toss" and Julie and Kalman won the "roll a ball" game. A fun time was had by all. Our WPA Christmas party will be held Dec. 13 at the Broadway Palms Dinner Theater in Fort Myers, Fla. The Hungarian Club of Port Charlotte will hold its Christmas party on Dec. 11 at the Golden Corral in Punta Gorda. Thanks to Eugene and Helen Toth and Ilona and Antal Schmidt for their help. The Hungarian American Club of Southwest Florida will host the following events:- Nov. 3, dinner-dance at the Forest Glen Country Club, Naples, with music by Zoltán Gergely;- Jan. 26, Farshang Bál at the Bonita Springs Elk Lodge, featuring a pig roast;- March 15, dinner-dance at the Tarpon Cove Yacht and Racquet Club, with music by Zoltán Gergely. Congratulations to Sonny and Michele Boano of Poland, Ohio, on the birth of their daughter Laney Elizabeth. She joins two-year-old Avary. She is my 16th great-grandchild. The girls lead nine to six.
