Congratulations to WPA member John Paul LaFlame on his recent promotion from SPC4 to Sergeant E5. Sgt. LaFlame is currently stationed at Camp Carroll in South Korea. Branch 800 Altoona, PA by Vincent Frank The fall season is in full swing now, and we hope you are enjoying the beauty as Mother Nature is showing her best and brightest of the autumn foliage. Branch 800 wishes all of you a Happy Halloween on Oct. 31. It's trick-or-treat night, so when the kids come knocking on your door, have a little treat for them. We all have to drive carefully on Halloween night, for the children will be running from house to house as they seek goodies. Birthday greetings go out to member Phyllis Aiken who is 75 years old this October. Phyllis enjoys working with crafts, helping with senior citizens and attending the branch's social events every year. Mrs. Aiken sees to it that her husband Bob gets to the meetings. We appreciate that, Phyllis. May God bless you always. We also extend belated birthday greetings to longtime member Carmen J. Piccirilli who celebrated his 80th birthday in September. Carmen tells me that he is one of only two surviving shoe repairers in Blair County. He is among the last practioners of a dying profession; another casualty of our "throw-away" society. He has owned Al's Shoe Shop in Hollidaysburg for 57 years. He said 50 years ago there were 52 shoe repair shops in Blair County; now there are only two. What ^wonderful time our branch members and their families had socializing at our branch's annual picnic in August at Highland Park. The weather, food, fellowship and gifts could not have been better. Thanks to all members for helping to make it a success. Keep in mind that there has been a change as to when daylight savings time begins. It will begin Sunday, Nov. 4. Remember to set your clocks back one hour before going to bed the Saturday before. Also, replace the batteries in your home's smoke detectors. Our branch's annual memorial Mass for our deceased brother and sister members will be held Thanksgiving Day at 8:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2000 - 12th Ave., Altoona. This has been a tradition for so many years. Please make a special effort to join us. Before you know it, it will be time for our branch Christmas party. This year's party is set for Sunday, Dec. 2, at 6:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, 3306 Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona. Deadline for reservations is Nov. 26. Call me at 814-695-0213 to reserve your place. All members, their family and their friends are welcome. The branch meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 7:00 p.m. will include the election of branch officers for the year 2008. All members are encouraged to attend this important meeting. If you want to purchase excellent life insurance at a fair price, or if you are interested in an annuity for your retirement, then please check out what the WPA has to offer before making any final decisions. Call Bob Jones in Altoona at 814-942-2661 for more information on how the WPA can help you and your family. 18 William Penn Life, October 2007
