MoneywiSe with Mark Lantz News you can use ways to stop identity theft 1. Destroy private records and statements - Tear up or shred all documents which have private information, i.e., Social Security Number, account numbers from banks, credit cards and credit card solicitations, etc. 2. Secure your mail - Don't mail your payments from your own mail box, as they can be stolen. Mail them at the post office, mail box at the corner or other secure location. 3. Safeguard your Social Security Number -Never carry your card with you. Don't put it on your checks. Know who you are providing your number to and why. 4. Don’t leave a paper trail - Destroy all papers with your account numbers on them. 5. Never let your credit card out of your sight. 6. Know who you’re dealing with - If you think the request is legitimate, contact the company yourself and confirm what you were told before revealing any of your personal data. 7. Take your name off the marketers’ lists - Ask them to put you on their do not call list. Companies do maintain their own listing, also. 8. Be more defensive with personal information- Ask if your social security number, driver's license number and /or date of birth are absolutely necessary. This information is required for the application of credit. Many thieves use the telephone to collect this data. 9. Monitor your credit report - Obtain a free annual copy at Annualcreditreport.com or call 877-322-8228. Look for suspicious activity. 10. Review your credit card statements carefully Close unused or unnecessary credit cards.
