Charitable Ideas A salute to those who care & share America to recognize its volunteers during National Volunteer Week April 17 to 23, 2005 VOLUNTEERS who share their time and talents to make a difference in their communities will be honored during National Volunteer Week, April 17 to 23,2005. This year's theme, "Inspire By Example!" sets the stage for local and national organizations not only to applaud the efforts of volunteers but also to encourage others to get involved in helping strengthen their communities. National Volunteer Week is sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network. "It's easy to overlook the importance of volunteers because they rarely sing their own praises; yet they change so many lives," said Robert K. Goodwin, president and chief executive officer of the Points of Light Foundation. "National Volunteer Week is a way of saying 'Thank you!' to the selfless men, women, and young people who embody the American spirit of caring for one another." Goodwin noted that according to Bureau of Labor Statistics' latest study on volunteers, over 64 million Americans volunteered their time—nearly 29 percent of the population. During National Volunteer Week, thousands of volunteers nationwide will receive presidential recognition for their service through the President's Volunteer Service Award~the most prestigious volunteer award currently associated with the White House. Like National Volunteer Week, this award seeks to inspire by example, honoring the service of our country's most committed volunteers and sharing their achievements to encourage more Americans to volunteer. National Volunteer Week began in 1974, when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing an annual celebration of volunteering. Every president since has signed a proclamation promoting the week. "We hope that National Volunteer Week will inspire others to become volunteers," concluded Goodwin. The Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network supports the vital work of millions of volunteers, who are helping to solve serious social problems in thousands of communities nationwide.
