played games. Gifts were distributed to the children and their parents. The Christmas stockings were filled with coloring books, crayons, pencils, pens and treats. Torma Branch 296 held its monthly meeting and election of officers on Dec. 9. The following were elected to serve our branch for the year 2005: Ron Balia, president; John Rusak, vice president; Diane M. Torma, secretary-treasurer; and Ronda Grotefend and Margaret Kosheba, auditors. Noreen Fritz installed the officers and auditors. The annual branch Christmas party was once again held at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Springdale on Dec. 11. The weather cooperated and we had one of the best turnouts we've had in years. The program began with a magical performance by Doc Dougherty. The children were awed by the magic and eager to volunteer as assistants. The entertainment was followed by a chorus of "Jingle Bells," which prompted the eagerly awaited arrival of Santa Claus. The wide-eyed children took turns sitting on Santa's lap to tell him of their Christmas wishes. Gift bags were then distributed to each child by Branch Coordinator George Charles. The afternoon concluded with a buffet lunch and Christmas cookies. Much thanks to the Home Office and Board of Directors for the financial assistance and promotional items. Also, President Balia wishes to thank the branch officers, members and friends who gave their time and effort to make this year's party successful, including: John Rusak, George and Irene Charles, Boris Gosciejew, Marge and Antoinette Kosheba, Noreen Fritz, Ronda Grotefend, Diane and Branch News Tony Thomas, Angela Misera, and John and Diane Torma. Thanks also to everyone who brought cookies and desserts. Our branch sponsored five holiday baskets this year for those in need. Thank you to the Board of Directors for supporting this worthy program. Congratulations to our Christmas raffle winners George Charles Sr. and Barbara House. Thanks to everyone who supported the raffle. We hold our monthly meetings on the second Thursday of each month at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Springdale at 7:30 p.m. The next scheduled meeting is on March 10, weather permitting. We encourage and welcome all branch members to attend. For your life insurance and annuity needs, call Noreen Fritz at 412- 821-1837. If you have branch news to share, call me at 724-339-2445. Branch 800 Altoona, PA by Vincent Frank It's that time of the year as we get ready to celebrate Valentine's Day on Feb. 14. Valentines bring fond memories to everyone. Do you remember the Valentine's box we had in grade school? It was probably a shoebox covered with red paper and decorated with lace doilies. You gave a Valentine to the teacher and to each child in your class. I am sure that you all remember those days. Dime stores sold small boxes with 25 different cards. There was one for the teacher and 24 for the class. A box sold for 29 cents. Is this memory coming back to you? So, if you want your special someone to know how much you care, then let your Valentine card do the talking. Happy Valentine's Day to all! Branch 800 sends congratulations to our National Officers, Board of Directors and Home Office staff as the WPA celebrates its 119th anniversary on Founders Day, Feb. 21. The Lenten season begins early this year. It begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 9. Lent is the 40 weekdays before Easter. It is a season observed by Christians throughout the world as a season of fasting and penitence. As Lent arrives, we would hope that we could be nearer to spring, but we know we can not even dream about that for a while. We must wait for spring just like everyone else. It is something that everyone is thinking about as the cold days of winter drag on. Branch 800 thanks the Home Office for the monetary help and gifts for the children at the branch's Christmas party. The Christmas stockings went over big with the kids. Thanks to all members who helped make another Christmas party a success. Our branch lost a longtime member when Samual R. Hipp died. He was 99 and living in Grayson, Ga., at the time of his death. May his soul rest in peace. For your life insurance needs, please call Bob Jones at 814-942-2661. Pray for all those who died in the earthquake. Branch 8114 Clarion, PA by Noreen Fritz Well, here it is again, the love month of February. Happy Valentine's Day!
