New Jersey fraternalists meet Spotlight TtticA&el WPA Medical Director PITTSBURGH - Congratulations to Michael Finikiotis, MD, the WPA's medical director, who was recently named the top internist in the Pittsburgh area, according to a survey of hundreds of physicians in Allegheny County. The survey was conducted by local television channel WPXI Channel 11. Doctors were asked who they would recommend in five different medical specialties. "People ask how many patients do I have, and I say one patient-the patient in front of me," Finikiotis said. Finikiotis is known as a doctor who does his homework and doesn't give up. His patients call him tenacious, always going the extra yard. "He takes a tremendous interest in you as an individual," said patient Patrick Carone. Finikiotis said it takes more than that. He said a good internist has to know a little about a lot. He has to refresh his/her knowledge and add to it by constantly reading and listening, said Finikiotis. "I tell people, you find a surgeon with the best hands in the city and you find an internist with the best ears in the city," he said. We at the WPA are certainly glad we "found" Dr. Mike when we needed a new medical director. ATLANTIC CITY -- The New Jersey Fraternal Congress (NFJC) held its 72nd Annual Convention Oct. 7 at the Hilton Hotel in Atlantic City. During the convention, delegates elected Theresa A. Kluchinski of the Ladies Pennsylvania Slovak Catholic Union to serve as president. WPA National Director Anthony C. Beke was elected first vice president. Other officers elected were Eryna Cvikula- Korchynsky (second vice president) of the Providence Association of the Ukrainian Catholics in America, and Halina Kalitka (secretary-treasurer) of the Polish National Alliance of Brooklyn, USA. Among those addressing the convention were New Jersey State Assemblyman Peter Eagler and Fred Grubbe, president of the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA). The NFCA presented its "Go For The Gold" Achievement Award to the NJFC, recognizing its overall involvement in planning and participating in community service, educational programs and fraternal activities. Settlement appreciates assistance The Home Office recently received a note of thanks from the Hungarian Settlement Historical Society in Louisiana, acknowledging the WPA's support of its efforts to turn the old Árpáhon school into a mi seum focusing on the history of the Hungarian settlement founded there in 1896. (See "Branching Out," May 2005) "What a wonderful gift from our Hungarian neighbors across the USA to know you dared to care about those in need," the note read. HSHS Secretary Juliana Petho Roberson included a personal note, promising to keep us abreast of the society's future accomplishments. 2 William Penn Life, December 2005
