National Volunteer Week, April 18 to 24,2004, designates a special time to recognize and celebrate the tremendous efforts of volunteers. National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as an annual celebration of volunteering. Since then, every U.S. president, along with many governors, mayors and other officials have signed proclamations and have participated in this highly visible, nationwide initiative. Volunteer Centers, fraternal societies, businesses, government agencies, hospitals, faith-based organizations and schools utilize National Volunteer Week to highlight their own volunteers and support service projects in the community. Simultaneously taking place during National Volunteer Week, thousands of volunteers also participate in local community service projects. A new national awards program being kicked off during National Volunteer Week this year is the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards (see related story, Page 7). This new award gives presidential recognition to people of all ages who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteer service. The award honors their achievements as a way to inspire others and encourage more Americans to help meet our country's needs. The WPA joins America in saluting our volunteers during this special week.
