NAPERVILLE, IL - The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule on the future of the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance within the next 30 days, and America's fraternal benefit societies are rallying its 10 million members to support their retention. "Under God," declared unconstitutional in the pledge by the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in June 2002, was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954, in part, due to the efforts of fraternal benefit societies. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the inclusion of "under God" in the pledge. The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA), the Association of America's Fraternal Benefit Societies, played a key role in having the words "under God" become a part of the pledge. Fratemalists began reciting the words in the pledge as early as 1951, three years before Congress passed-and President Eisenhower signed—legislation making them part of the pledge in 1954. "The membership of the NFCA strongly believes that the words PITTSBURGH - The WPA is making final preparations for our 21st Annual Golf Tournament. The tournament will be held on Saturday, July 24, at the Dauphin Highlands Golf Course in Harrisburg, Pa. Those wishing to play in this year's tournament and who have not submitted their entry form should turn to Page 19 of this issue of the William Penn Life to find the official entry form. All entries must be submitted to the Home Office by June 25. Hotel accommodations for the weekend will be at the Harrisburg East Holiday Inn. All golfers and guests must make their own room reservations directly with the hotel. 'under God,' are not unconstitutional and we support their retention," said NFCA President & CEO Frederick Grubbe. "In this, the 50th anniversary of the inclusion of 'under God' in the pledge, we should be celebrating this uniquely American moment, rather than worrying about casting it aside. To alter the pledge, an oath of American patriotism, in this way is a slap at one of America's most revered traditions," he added. America's Fraternal Benefit Societies went on record in both 2002 and 2003 against the possible removal of "under God" from the Pledge. Delegates to 116th and 117th Annual Meetings of the NFCA adopted resolutions deploring a ruling by the circuit court. The court's decision made it unlawful for the pledge to be recited in California public schools, and public schools in the eight other Western states covered by the court. On Nov. 13,2003, President Bush signed Senate Bill 2690, reaffirming the words "one Nation under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance and "In God we trust" as the National Motto. Call 717-939-7841. Room rates are $85 per night. The weekend's activities will begin with a reception on Friday, July 23, at the hotel and conclude Saturday evening with the annual golf awards dinner.
