For Starters "May a part of each day for the rest of our lives be devoted to the Spirit of Christmas." Christmas: A time for remembrance, reflection and renewal by George S. Charles, Jr., FIC Christmas brings to mind memories along with deep abiding hopes. I will never forget all the great Christmases I've enjoyed. Each year, I cherish this special time more and thank God for making it possible. It seems that the Christmas spirit gives strength to us all. Christmas is a time to rejoice and be thankful for God's blessings and to pause for a year-end accounting oF our individual progress. Christmas gives us all the opportunity to think of those we love and how best to express that love than through the many traditions of Christmas. May we all try to carry this seasonal attitude into our daily lives during the coming new year. We are certainly proud of the many fraternal efforts offered by our members throughout the year and we look forward to your continued support and assistance in the new year. We at William Penn Association have done our very best to fulfill our mission to our membership with honor and prudence. Our faith has always been in you and hopefully our efforts will grow to greater glory. The whole world awaits Christmas, the birthday of Christ, to give new hope and love and peace to all mankind. May a part of each day for the rest of our lives be devoted to the spirit of Christmas, renewing our Association's purposes and concerns for each other, and may our love and friendship never cease to grow. My wife Dianne and son Steve share with me in truly wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and happy new year. Spotlight tfafaef&ity Br. 14 Cleveland, OH CLEVELAND — Congratulations to Gabriel Bly of Branch 14 Cleveland, Ohio, who earlier this year participated in "48 Hours of Making Art," an event sponsored by the B.K. Smith Gallery at Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio. Twenty-three works of art were created in 48 hours during the weekend of Aug. 30 to 31, and Gabriel was the youngest artist to participate. The artists never know exactly how each of their works will turn out. Each comes to the weekend with an idea and some materials which they believe they might need to create their work. Their works are produced during an intense 24-hour residency period during which time they eat, sleep and create. Gabriel's part in the show illustrated his interest in filmmaking. He Branch 14 member Gabriel Bly, 12, used a video camera to create his contribution to a recent art exhibit. decided to interview and videotape each artist, discussing their on-going creations. His performance art piece was shown at the official reception held on Sept. 12 and was shown throughout the duration of the exhibit. New NFCA chair pledges continuity, strong leadership WASHINGTON - Frederick A. Ohlde, senior vice president at Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, was elected chair of the Board of the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) during the NFCA's Annual Meeting held here in September. Ohlde pledged to maintain continuity in principles and focus and to provide character-centered leadership during a time of change. "We face critical challenges in our industry today, challenges that cannot be resolved quickly with a cursory glance or a shallow promise, "he said. "They require a sustained focus that is strategic, plans that are acted on and leadership that remains strong and enduring." Ohlde has served on the NFCA Board since 1999, three years as a director and one year as vice chair. 2 William Pen Life, December 2003
