Charitable Ideas WPA’s Operation Christmas Child 2002 is all wrapped up by Dianne A. Charles Each year caring people fill shoe boxes and Samaritan's Purse delivers them to needy children around the world. These boxes bring comfort, hope, and joy to children worldwide suffering from AIDS, war, terrorism, natural disasters, and famine. For 2002, the worldwide Operation Christmas Child campaign collected more than 6 million gift filled shoe boxes. And for those of you who were wondering, over 93,000 were distributed to suffering children in Hungary. The William Penn Assocation goal for 2002 was 600 filled shoe boxes and to our astonishment you donated an overwhelming 880. A total of $3,480 was collected to purchase items and cover the requested $5 per box donation. What a great response from such wonderful people. The Home Office was overwhelmed by the number of filled shoe boxes donated by our members and friends. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated to this project, making it such a huge success. With so many filled boxes, the Association had to rent a U-Haul truck. All of the filled shoe boxes were delivered on Nov. 21,2002, to the Operation Christmas Child collection center located at Northway Christian Community Center in Wexford, Pa.
