Branching Out with Endre Csornán Saint Stephen First King of Hungary DURING THE 9TH CENTURY, the Magyars began their westward trek from Asia, under the leadership of their chief, Prince Árpád. Árpád made several journeys to the Carpathian Basin before settling in the southeastern part with his seven tribes. Árpád took the central area west of the Duna (Danube) River for his own, the Magyar tribe. Settling into this new homeland did not at first keep Magyar warriors at home. For many decades they headed out on forays, either for booty or as mercenaries. Two major defeats during the course of the 10th century brought an end to these expeditions and convinced the warriors to exchange their swords for plowshares. Prince Árpád's grandson Géza, who served as the leader of the Magyar people from 972 to 997 A.D. was the first to be baptized, along with his entire family. He invited Christian missionaries into the country. Géza's son István (Stephen) received the Holy Crown from Pope Sylvester II. The coronation took place on Christmas Day in the year 1000. István remained the apostle and saint of the Magyar people. Szent (Saint) István's deeds were always governed by Christian ethics aimed at leading his people toward God. He outlined his principles in his admonitions to his son, Prince Imre: "If you wish honor of Kingship, be peace-loving. Rule over all without anger, pride, or hatred, but with love, tenderness and humanity...." István and his son Imre were both canonized in 1038. To this day, Hungarians pray to him: "O, where art thou, radiant star of the Magyars?" Because he Christianized Hungary, István received from Rome the rank of a saint, and on Aug. 20 every year (or the Sunday nearest that date) the Magyars celebrate Szent István Napját all over the world.
