It was a pleasure to attend the Hungarian Room Committee meeting recently and to see what a wonderful job this organization is doing. As always, it was wonderful to see so many of our friends within the WPA family. Congratulations to John Tollas Jr. who was chosen to participate in the Penn-Ohio football game on June 27 at Geneva College. John was one of 14 players on the Ohio team to receive scholarship awards. Congratulations also to Robert Horvath, president of the Youngstown culture group, for organizing and overseeing the international building and displays at the Canfield Fair for more than 40 years. At the June meeting, Ali Patterson was chosen as the meeting incentive raffle winner, but was not present to receive the prize. So, the pot for our next meeting continues to grow. May those attending the General Convention have a successful and enjoyable time. Branch 34 Pittsburgh, PA by Andy McNelis On June 28 Branch 34 and the American Hungarian Social Club in Hazelwood sponsored a picnic at McBride Park in Lincoln Place. What a success it was! There was great food and refreshments available to all WPA members, plus the wonderful music provided by Dorothy. I thank National Director and Branch Vice President Mike Kara for coming up with the idea for the picnic and coordinating the menu with Mickey Milcsevics and his cooking crew. I mentioned at the picnic that it was reminiscent of the old days, but I failed to mention those picnics were so successful because of the time and effort put into organizing them by Mike Kara, and for that I apologize. Speaking of picnics, do not forget the WPA picnic at Penn Scenic View on Saturday, Sept. 13. As we did last year, Branch 34 is considering sponsoring a bus to the WPA picnic if we have enough interest from our members. If you would like to go to the picnic by bus, please call Andy McNelis at 412-421-6031 and leave your name and phone number (a phone number is a must so I can call you with the time that the bus will leave) and how many people will be joining you (guests are welcome). We will be asking for a $5 donation from each passenger. We send our sympathy to the family of Matilda Nemeth who passed away last month. May she rest in peace. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers. Branch members that are celebrating their birthdays in August include Amy Marie Balia, Joe Berei, Brian Colleran, Caroline Colleran, Margaret Király, Margaret Stefan and Jim North. May your days be many and full of good health and happiness. If you have any news you would like to share, please contact Andy McNelis at 412-421-6031. For information about WPA insurance and annuity policies, please contact Branch Coordinator Maria Bistey at 412-431-6035. William Penn Life, August 2003 19
