20th Annual Golf Tournament A senior moment Senior players shine at WPA’s Annual Golf Tournament Golf Tournament Co-Administrators Andrew W. McNelis (left) and Frank J. GREENSBURG, PA -- They say that youth will be served. But, at the WPA's 20th Annual Golf Tournament July 12, it seemed the "seniors" weren't quite ready to give up their places at the table. The tournament's low score was shot by one of those senior players: Bob Harbison of Branch 336 Harrisburg. His 75 was two strokes better than the 77 shot by Joe Sanders, winner of the low gross title in the ages 18-59 bracket. On the women's side, Betsy Griffith shot a 97 to win the low gross title (ages 18-59) for the fourth time. But, just one stroke back was senior women's champ Dolores Horvath of Branch 129 Columbus, Ohio. The four were among 88 golfers who enjoyed a weekend of golf and fraternal fun during our 20th annual tournament, played at The Madison Club in Madison, Pa. If you turn to Page 10 and look at the pictures of many of the tournament's winners, you'll notice Mrs. Horvath's face appears frequently. That's because she won not only the seniors low gross title but also the closest-to-the-line skill shot contest on Hole #1 and the closest-to-the-pin contest on Hole #3. And, while no one scored an ace on the $15,000 Hole-In- One Contest hole, Mrs. Horvath did get her tee shot closest to the pin on Hole #8, a shot which won her $500. All told, she went home with $700 in winnings. A number of non-golfers also went home winners, courtesy of the benefit raffle held during Saturday's golf awards dinner and the Chinese auction held during Friday's reception. Returning as part of the weekend festivities was a special "Fraternal Prize Drawing" during which two members in attendance were each awarded a $2,000 paid-up WPA life insurance policy. The lucky prize winners were Jared Petraglia of Branch 8 Johnstown, Pa., and Ralph Schuller of Branch 296 Springdale, Pa.The weekend's biggest prize—a new set of Taylor Made golf clubs and bag—given to the winner of the annual Auction Raffle, went to Home Office employee Donna Griffin. The success of our senior golfers on Saturday was perhaps foreshadowed by the events at Friday night's golfers reception. Bob Harbison showed the younger players how it's done by winning the pitching contest. Meanwhile, fellow senior player Lou Taylor (left) sank three out of three putts in the putting contest. Both men won $125 for their efforts. A big "Thank You" goes to all those who participated in the weekend's activities. Your presence helped to make it a special event for all of us. We also thank you for your generosity as the tournament and its related activities raised $7,548 for the WPA's Scholarship Foundation. Of that total, $3,150, was contributed by our hole sponsors (see list on next page). The benefit raffle raised $1,985 while the Chinese Auction raised $1,397. The remainder was generated by Friday night's putting and pitching contests, the golfer's challenge at the practice green and several donations, including an anonymous donation of $500. The success of this year's tournament was made possible through the efforts of many dedicated people. Our thanks go to the National Officers, the Home Office staff, tournament Co- Administrators Andrew W. McNelis and Frank J. Wukovits Jr., our hole spotters, those who contributed the delicious baked goods for Friday's reception, those who donated prizes for the benefit raffle and the Chinese auction and the staff and management of The Madison Club and the Four Point Sheraton Greensburg. ftt iK tfarrisbo-rf, 8 Hilliam Penn Life.
