_____[ln Brief j_____ WPA picnic to be a great fraternal fest ROCKWOOD, PA - If you haven’t already noticed, the theme for this year’s WPA picnic at Penn Scenic View is “A Great Fraternal- Fest.” That’s certainly what our picnic has been the previous two years and will be once again this year. Organizers anticipate more than 1,000 members and friends of the WPA will spend the day with us on Saturday, Sept. 13. For details about the picnic, please see the ad on the inside of the front cover of this issue. Directions to Penn Scenic View with a map can be found on the back cover. We hope you and your family will join us for a day of delicious food, traditional music, family fun and great fraternal spirit. OCC2003 update PITTSBURGH - The piles of giftfilled shoe boxes at the Home Office are growing each day. But, there’s still plenty of room for your donations to this year’s Operation Christmas Child campaign. All donations are due at the Home Office by Sept. 15. I For Starters I Media partner, corporate effort help spread message of Join Hands Day NAPERVILLE, IL - Organizers of the fourth annual Join Hands Day are calling the event another success and expressing optimism for even greater success in the future. Much of that enthusiasm was generated by two major developments. The first was the formation of a partnership between Join Hands Day and Clear Channel Worldwide, a global leader in communications which operates more than 1,200 radio and 39 television stations in the U.S. The second was a nationwide effort by Kohl's Department Stores in which 3,500 Kohl's associates in 300 locations volunteered for this year's Join Hands Day, June 21. Both developments should benefit not only Join Hands Day but also the fraternal benefit system. "Fraternal benefit societies have been working toward a partnership with an organization like Clear Channel Worldwide," said Michael Stivoric, chairman of Join Hands Day. Clear Channel will develop a public awareness campaign for the event as well as the charitable and community service aspects of fraternal benefit societies. For 2003, Clear Channel partnered with fraternal benefit societies in four cities: Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn.; San Antonio, Texas; Milwaukee, Wise, and Omaha, Neb. In these communities, a Clear Channel radio station promoted the local Join Hands Day project to entice more volunteers to participate and to share information about fraternal benefit societies. In San Antonio, additional support came through TV promotion for the project and a giant billboard. This was the first year that Kohl's has worked nationally on Join Hands Day. Its efforts represent the single largest corporate volunteer effort in support of Join Hands Day. "Kohl's is a model for other businesses," said Robert Goodwin, president and CEO of the Points of Light Foundation "We hope that the size of Kohl's efforts on Join Hands Day will draw more attention to this unique day and encourage other corporations to get involved in a big way." JHD moves to May Beginning in 2004, Join Hands Day will move to the first Saturday in May. Organizers say they hope the move will bring with it more involvement by schools, which were in recess when the event was held in June. The next Join Hands Day will be held on Saturday, May I, 2004. Convention Update The Association’s 35th General Convention will convene in Pittsburgh in less than a month. As you can imagine, much is happening at the Home Office in preparation for this important gathering. Everyone here is eager to welcome our delegates to our hometown. You can be sure our staff is working hard to ensure a pleasant and productive stay for all involved. We now direct your attention to Pages 21 to 23 of this issue. On these pages you will find the official listings of elected delegates, alternate delegates and ex-officio delegates to the Convention. Please read this list. The men and women listed there will be deciding the direction our Association will pursue for the next four years. We congratulate those elected to represent our members and look forward to seeing them this September. 2 William Penn Life, August 2003
