60th Annual Bowling Tournament Bowling weekend nets record amount for scholarship fund MANY MEMBERS ENJOYED a good weekend during our bowling tournament, but not as good a weekend as our Scholarship Foundation did. A total of $16,735 was raised for the benefit of the Foundation, making this year's tournament the most successful fund-raising weekend ever. Most of that total ($10,000) was raised during the annual meeting of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation held May 23 at the Radisson Hotel Greentree. The benefit raffle drawn during Saturday's bowling awards dinner raised $2,430. Another $1,300 was collected through the lane sponsorship program (see list on next page). The ever-popular Chinese auction, held during Friday's bowlers reception, featured 44 prize packages and raised another $2,000 for the scholarship foundation. Our thanks to one and all for their generosity and support. In other Foundation business, 14 members were elected during the annual meeting to serve on the Foundation's Board of Directors. They were: Rose P. Antal, Ronald Balia, Steven Beke, Kathy Chobody, Tom House, Stephen J. Ivancso Jr., Margaret Leonardo, Joan Mauerman, Helen Molnár, Michael Oberg, Carrie Ryan, Alexander Sera, Carol Truesdell and Donna Varga. Mr. Oberg, a WPA scholarship recipient entering his junior year at the University of Michigan, thanked the Foundation on behalf of all his fellow recipients. "When I was younger, I thought of the William Penn Association as bowling, picnics and Christmas parties," he said. As he grew older he "wondered how he became a member of this great fellowship." It was his grandfather, the late Richard Miastkowski, who enrolled him when Michael was just a boy and whom Michael honored with a donation to the Foundation."! am very proud to be part of such a great community of people," he said. Also among the donations was a check for $500, representing money raised by Carrie Ryan. Carrie collected the money from her coworkers in memory of her late brother, Benjamin Bero. "All I did was tell [my co-workers] I was collecting donations for the Scholarship Foundation and they responded so generously." One co-worker even donated $100, she said. Thank you, lane sponsors! We thank the 50 individuals, branches and businesses listed below who sponsored lanes for this year's bowling tournament. Because of their generosity, $1,300 was raised for the benefit of our Scholarship Foundation. A. G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. (jack Kelly) Arthur Barillo George W. Batyko Anthony C. Beke Margaret H.
