Branch 18 will celebrate the 115th anniversary of the WPA on Oct. 14 at the Hungarian American Cultural Center. The event will begin with a dinner at 1:00 p.m. followed by a onehour concert featuring Primas George Bátyi and his ensemble. The celebration will conclude with three hours of open dancing. Tickets are $10 for WPA members and $15 for nonmembers. The WPA is helping to sponsor the North American tour of the Partium Choir from Transylvania. The choir will perform in our area on April 29 at at 4:00 p.m. at the American Hungarian Reformed Church. Our next branch meeting will be at the HACC on April 20 at 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you there. Our Mackinaw trip is sold out. We may run that one again. We are planning a one or two night trip to Soaring Eagle in October. More details will be announced soon. Have a happy and blessed Easter with those you love. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH by Kathy Novak Hoping everyone will enjoy the spring season after all the winter experiences we've had. On March 18 the Youngstown American Hungarian Federation hosted its annual commemoration of the 1848 War of Independence. The program included the Rev. Msgr. Dezső Torok, the Rev. Melvin Rusnak and the Youngstown Hungarian Choir. Joining us at our March meeting was Endre Csornán, the WPA's new membership activities coordinator. Mr. Csornán told our members of some new fraternal activities that are in the planning process. He also told us about the upcoming April 26 concert in Ligonier, Pa. by the Partium University Choir. Our members will try to arrange a bus trip to this event. Anyone in the Youngstown area wanting more information about the concert trip should call Maria Goda at (330) 793-4905. The Hungarian Reformed Church Cultural Club held a dinner March 18 to commemorate the revolution of 1848-49. The menu included breaded pork chops and all the trimmings. Our branch will send a ladies team, and several members to cheer them on, to the Annual Bowling Tournament in Toledo. If anybody is interested in bowling, please call Branch Secretary Margaret Leonardo or myself as soon as possible. Our sick members are on the mend. Janet Veigh is feeling much better and is back to work after hip replacement surgery. Ferenc Relle is making progress after quintuple bypass surgery. He exercises three times a week at the Grant Hospital recovery unit and hopes to be able to drive in a couple weeks. Mary Ann and Bob Hinebaugh recently returned from a six-week vacation in Florida. Goydan Branch 226 member Fred Stipkovits has received an appointment to Officer Candidate School at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. Fred is currently a Boatswain Mate 3rd Class. After graduating from McKeesport Area High School in 1996, Fred entered Coast Guard basic training in Cape May, N.J. He was then assigned to the Coast Guard reserve unit in Pittsburgh where he was named the 1997 Enlisted Person of the Year out of 49 active and reserve members. He earned an associates degree in applied aviation science from the Community College of Beaver County (Pa.) and a bachelor's degree in aviation management from Robert Morris College. He holds a commerical pilot license with an instrument and multi-engine rating. After graduating from Robert Morris, he received orders for active duty at the Coast Guard Marine Safety Office in Pittsburgh. Once he receives his commission, he intends to pursue an appointment to Coast Guard Flight School in Pensacola, Fla. Fred is the son of Fred L. Stipkovits and the late Carol A. Stipkovits, a brother of Stephen Stipkovits. He is the grandson of Doris Stipkovits and the late Fred J. Stipkovits. Branch 590 Cape Coral, FL by Joan Mauerman Happy spring to all.
