Startere^BH f'UM' t(U George S.Charles, Jr., FIC Thanks to you, we’ve reached another milestone On Feb. 21,2001, our Association will celebrate its 115th anniversary. As we celebrate this milestone we pay special tribute to the 13 dedicated founders of the William Penn Association and all of the past and present officers, directors, auditors, employees and members that devoted so much of their lives to building our Association that is shared by all of us today, with so much pride and fond memories. Your dedication, loyalty and commitment to our goals is based on our many years of progress generated by thousands of dedicated people who were determined to move forward. We must continue to support programs within our branches that are designed to bring members together more closely in the bonds of brotherly love. Our continued objective is to build fraternal programs at the local and national levels that will attract prospective members to our organization. We also have an obligation to continue to promote leadership skills so as to ensure a bright future for our Association. All of us realize how important it is that our youth be given a chance to possess, leadership skills. By helping and promoting our members, we are helping to better our Association. Our Association has been fortunate in that we have many members of all ages involved in our many programs and activities. It is inspiring to know that our Association realizes the importance of family and will continue to support the family and family values. My wife Dianne, son Steve, and I, as a family and members, salute William Penn Association. As we move forward our Association will continue to dedicate ourselves to you. Our fraternal spirit is still glowing like the spirit in the hearts of the founders of our Association 115 years ago. We thank you, our members, for you have helped preserve the pride of our past. You are the keystone of the current strength of our financial structure, and you are the key to our future success. WPA seeks applicants for scholarships Don't run a-'fowl' on New Years Day, eat your pork Responding to the article ["Chewing the Fat"] in the January 2001 edition of William Perm Life. First it should be known that both my father and mother were Hungarian. At one time I spoke the language fluently. Re: the pork and sauerkraut on New Years Day. Mother said the pig will push wealth and good fortune towards you. If you have fowl, they will scrape these things away from you. This was an honored tradition in our home. No fowl on New Years Day. A secondary item for New Years Day was that my mother would not spend any money on that day, even to the extent of holding back her church envelope. She stated that if you pay out on New Years Day, you will have excessive expenditures in that year. I trust that this is of some help to your question. Andrew J. Boonie Oscoda, MI Thanks, Andrew. I hope you don’t mind that Chef Vilmos passed your letter onto us. He thought we should share it with our readers, especially those who—like him—do not know why folks eat pork on New Years. But, why did they believe pigs brought good fortune?
