PITTSBURGH - For four decades, Albert J. Stelkovics' name was synonymous with the William Penn Association throughout the fraternal benefit community. But, to those who worked with him in the WPA Home Office, he was always "Mr. Stel." Somehow, that moniker seemed appropriate. While his knowledge, dedication to fraternalism and position commanded respect, his kindness, warmth and friendly manner welcomed informality. Calling him "Mr. Stelkovics" seemed too formal; calling him "Al" seemed a bit disrespectful. So, "Mr. Stel" it was. Mr. Stelkovics passed away July 1, 2001, at Hospice by the Sea in Boca Raton, Fla. He was 87. During a testimonial banquet in 1981 honoring Mr. Stelkovics' retirement, the late Louis L. Varga, former WPA national vice president, recalled what made his longtime colleague special. "No employee ever went to him with a problem and was ever rebuffed," Mr. Varga said. Looking over the family, friends and fellow fratemalists gathered that night, Mr. Stelkovics summed up his own career, saying: "Your presence here this evening is ample testimony to the fact that one does not toil in vain in the field of fraternalism." His long and distinguished career began in May 1940 when he was hired as assistant supreme secretary of the Rákóczi Aid Association. He served in that position until October 1955 when the Rákóczi and Verhovay Aid Association merged to form the WPA.
