Operation Christmas Child 2000 »SBI* EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE yet to celebrate Easter, it's not too early to start participating in this special Christinas time project. The idea behind Operation Christmas Child remains simple. You take a shoe box and fill it with small toys, school supplies, personal items and other gifts. The box is delivered at Christmastime to a child suffering from the effects of war, natural disaster, famine or other crisis. The items inside the box may seem small, but their impact can be immeasurable. We call it "hope in a shoe box." Last year, the WP A collected 354 gift-filled shoe boxes. That success, coupled with countless requests from our members to conduct another campaign, convinces us that we can and will have a more successful campaign in 2000. You can help in one of three ways: 1 Fill a shoe box or two with items from the list found at the bottom of this page. 2 Donate items which we can include in shoe boxes. 3 Donate money which we can use to buy items. Make out your check to "William Penn Association." And please note on the check that it is for Operation Christmas Child. Monetary donations should be mailed to our Home Office. Loose items should be delivered to either the Home Office or your local branch president or branch coordinator. All donations must be received at the Home Office by Sept. 15. If you decide to donate a gift-filled shoe box, you can either: • Deliver it or ship it to the Home Office by Sept. 15; • Give it to your branch president or branch coordinator by Sept. 1 (so it can reach us on time); or • Drop it off anytime at one of Operation Christmas Child's 114 collection centers located across America. For the location of the center nearest you, call 828-262-1980, or log onto www.samaritans.org. If you take your shoe box to a collection center, please write or call the WPA Home Office so we can record your donation for our campaign. If you have any questions or need more information, please call the Home Office toll-free weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (EST) at 1-800-848-7366. Topping last year's effort will be difficult, but with your help, it's possible. Ujj] Howto send hope in a shoe box • Find an empty shoe box. (You can wrap it with Christmas paper-wrapping the box and lid separately, but it’s not required.) • Decide whether the box will be for a boy or a girl and choose an age category: 2-4 years old; 5-9; or 10-14. Mark it on the lid or use the slips found on the back cover of this issue. • Fill the box with gifts (for ideas, see the list below). Please do not include any of the following:- Toy guns, knives, war toys • Chocolate or perishable food- Shampoo, lotion, or liquids- Vitamins or any medicines- Used or breakable items • Enclose $5 or more in the box to cover shipping and other costs. Make checks payable to “Samaritan’s Purse.” Put a rubber band around the box. • Deliver your box to either: (I) the WPA Home Office by Sept. 15; or (2) your branch president or branch coordinator by Sept I; or (3) to an Operation Christmas Child donation center at anytime. HERE'S AN IDEA: If you plan to attend the WPA bowling tournament, golf tournament or Hungarian Language Camp, bring your gift-filled shoe boxes with you.
