Members of Branch 296 Springdale, Pa., welcome Sonto Claus to the branch’s annual family Christmas party. Branch 336 Harrisburg, PA by Charles Johns Our branch held its Christmas party Dec. 12 at the Verhovay Home Association building. Eighty-seven children and 74 adults attended this annual event. There were clowns to entertain the children and caroling to get us all in the holiday spirit. The children received stockings stuffed with fruit and candy. Everyone enjoyed hot dogs, ice cream and soda. Santa arrived, talked to all the children and gave each a gift. It was a huge success for our Branch and the Home Association. Branch 352 Coraopolis, PA by Dianne A. Charles Now that the holidays are over, it's time to think bowling tournament. This year the tournament will be in Cleveland. Our branch teams are forming. If you are interested in joining a Branch 352 team, call Vice President Jim Deak at (412) 462-7554. Our next scheduled branch meeting is Feb. 19 at 11:30 a.m. at the Old Country Buffet in Bridgeville. Do come and join us, get involved in our activities and bring us your ideas. Congratulations to everyone in the WPA as our Association celebrates its 114th anniversary on Feb. 21. Happy birthday to Joshua Walker who will be celebrating his special day Feb. 22. Okay, people, I know you've been waiting to hear this. Yes, we are doing Operation Christmas Child as an Association-wide charitable project again this year, and I have agreed to organize it. We are going to try to top our 354 boxes from last year. I've been having fun already. I love those after- Christmas sales. Bob Ivancso, chairman of the National Auditing Committee, has offered (or should I say, was drafted) to get as many empty shoe boxes as needed. Last year, he brought more than 100 boxes to Pittsburgh, and I knew better than to ask any questions. You should have seen his box-filled car. I can only imagine the looks he got on his drive from Toledo. Elsie and Frank, don't think I forgot about you. You were so kind to bring all those boxes from New Jersey last year. I'm hoping you will do it again this year. And, Margo, the Pittsburgh area is having some really good sales now. I assume the Crosswicks area is too. So do make me proud. Joan and Mike, I'll be waiting for all those boxes filled with rays of sunshine. Cute, huh? Mike, I hope you recuperate quickly. Jack and Kristi, I need your help, too. Last year you did such a good job wrapping boxes and shopping for items to be included in the boxes that I'm drafting-I mean, asking-you for your help and support this year. The Home Office soon will be sending information to the branches on how to participate. If you have any questions, call George S. Charles Jr. at 1-800-848-7366, ext. 121. To those Operation Christmas Child supporters whose names weren't mentioned in this article: be on alert. I will get you in some future article. We would like everyone to support this project. (By the way, Jack, if the Rotary would like to get involved with this project, we will accept their help.) Any Branch 352 members with news to share can call me at (412) 221-5136. Happy Valentine's Day to all. Branch 800 Altoona, PA by Vincent Frank Branch 800 mourns the death of Edwin T. Smith, our faithful auditor for many years. He died Jan. 14,2000, at his Hillcrest apartment. He was a member of St. Mary's Church in Hollidaysburg and a former member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Tyrone, Pa., where he served as a eucharistic minister. Ed's first wife and five children died in a fire in 1952. Ed attended our meetings and took part in all the social affairs of the branch. He was a longtime member, and we will miss him. We extend our sympathy to his wife Evelyn and his family. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Matthew's Church with the Rev. Joseph Orr and the Rev. John Palkó as celebrants. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Tyrone. May his soul rest in peace. Happy Valentine's Day on Feb. 14 to all members of our society. It's a day for kids and adults. Let us remember our loved ones in some little way. The WPA will celebrate its 114th Willi» Phi Life, February 2000 19
