‘Niki* doing well nearly 12 years after transplant Here’s some happy news to brighten your new year. Home Office employee Charlotte Mozga recently received a Christmas card from the Pécsvárady family in Hungary. If that family name seems familiar, that’s because it appeared frequently in this publication 12 years ago. It was in 1988 that the story of Nikoletta Pécsvárady reached our office. “Niki” was a four-year-old girl from Sárospatak, Hungary. She came to the U.S. in 1997, accompanied by her father Kont, to receive treatment for primary sclerosing cholangitis, a rare liver disease. She underwent two liver transplants at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh before being allowed to return to Hungary in August 1988. The cost of her medical care reached into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The WPA appealed to its members to help defray Niki’s health care expenses. Touched by Niki’s story, the WPA and its members contributed slightly more than $9,000 to this worthy cause. Today, nearly 12 years after her transplants, Niki is in excellent health. "Niki kifogástalan jó egészségnek örvend!” her father writes. She will be 17 years old this July. Retired Home Office employee Maria Bistey said she hopes to visit the Pécsváradys when she travels to Hungary this month. If she does, we will pass on whatever information Maria can share with us. In the meantime, it is good to know that your donations, volunteer work, good will and prayers have not been in vain. And we send our continued best wishes to Niki and her family. BjibyOne ••• The search is over PITTSBURGH - Well, that didn't take very long, did it? The new year was only in its third day when we received word about a winner in our BabyOne 2000 contest. Congratulations to Phoebe Marie Jackson, born at 3:28 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 3,2000. As the child whose birth was the first reported to the Home Office, she will receive a $2,000 juvenile life insurance policy, courtesy of the WPA. To qualify for the prize, at least one of her parents had to be an adult lifebenefit member of the WPA. We are pleased to report that both her parents, Mary and Shawn Jackson, are members of Branch 189 Alliance, Ohio. For the record, Phoebe Marie weighed in at 8 pounds, 2 ounces and was 20 inches long. We hope to have a picture of our lucky little winner in our next issue.
