WPA hosts successful golf tournament WEIRTON, WV - Members and friends of the WPA enjoyed another successful fraternal weekend during our 16th Annual Golf Tournament held here July 10. The Blackmoor Golf Club in nearby Richmond, Ohio—with its numerous trees and tight, steeply sloped fairways—provided a tough challenge for our golfers. That and a hot, sunny afternoon made complet-William J. Kish of Branch 14 Cleveland (center) won a new set of golf clubs and bag in the annual auction raffle. Congratulating him are Tournament Co-Administrators Andrew W. McNelis (I) and Elmer A. Furedy. ing 18 holes an accomplishment in itself. For a complete list of the winners, see Page 12. The weekend's most exciting moment occurred at the 15th hole when Todd Whichard's tee shot landed past the pin then rolled back down the green, stopping on the lip of the cup. He was a fraction of an inch from a hole-in-one and a $5,000 prize. Robert Kramer of Branch 226 McKeesport, Pa., didn't get a hole-inone either, but his shot during Friday night's pitching contest was tops in a rain-shortened contest. It was part of the golfers reception held at the Best Western Inn in Weirton, which also was the site of the awards dinner. Our thanks to all those who volunteered their time and effort to help us conduct an enjoyable and successful weekend. Our thanks also to our golfers, hole sponsors and others who— because of their generosity—helped us to raise $5,123 for our scholarship foundation. And, special thanks to our golfers, without whom we have no tournament. We hope to see you next year in Columbus! |WPL| National V.P.-Secretary Richard W. The first challenge greeted our golfers Saturday morning at the practice green. For a $2 donation to the WPA's scholarship fund, golfers could win $20. All they had to do was sink a putt from a pre-set distance. It proved to be a little too much of a challenge as no one sank a winning putt. The second challenge awaited golfers at hole #15. This time, again for a $2 donation, golfers could win $10 for placing their tee shot on the green. Fourteen golfers walked away winners. Congratulations to Tom Kalu panov, Todd Whichard, Tom House, John Horvath, Ron Solomon, Louis Horvath, Jack Kelly, Ralph Manning, Gordon Scherer, Dee Macklin, Nick Toth, Bernard Drab, John Recktosh and Julius Kupas. All made the green off the tee. Special thanks to John Recktosh, who donated $5 of his winnings back to the scholarship fund, and Julius Kupas, who donated his entire $10 prize.
