SowteM mäße towuuxmatt <t fat faitentuzí wedéeetd PITTSBURGH - About 200 bowlers and their guests marked the unofficial start of summer this Memorial Day weekend by attending the 56th Annual WPA Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days in Pittsburgh. The event attracted bowlers from Ohio, Michigan, New Jersey, Illinois and Pennsylvania, including 25 children who had a great time participating in the Juvenile Fun Event. No one walked away with the $10,000 prize for a 300 game. But, that didn't seem to bother the bowlers, who clearly enjoyed the chance to bowl a few games in the company of good friends both often and seldomseen. Some folks did go home with extra cash following the weekend. For a complete list of winners, see Pages 14 and 15. A select few won more by bowling a strike at the right time. The smiling faces of our "Lucky Strike" winners appear on the next page. One member who had a lot to smile about was Mark Schmidt of Branch 249 Dayton, Ohio. Mark won the vacation auction raffle during the tournament awards dinner Saturday evening. It was the second time Mark had won the auction raffle in the last three years. The weekend got off to a good start with the Friday night bowlers reception. Everyone enjoyed the free food and refreshments. The children really enjoyed the bowling and video games. Dozens of people happily donated a few bucks to the scholarship foundation to have their caricature drawn. The tournament kicked off Saturday morning with Jennie Wislie of Branch 296 Springdale, Pa., and Bill Mayor of Branch 34 Pittsburgh rolling the official first balls at Princess Lanes. From there, the bowlers took over. As usual, the biggest winner was the WPA's scholarship foundation, which netted more than $11,000 from the weekend (see below). m It takes a lot of effort by a lot of people to pull off an event like the WPA’s Annual Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days. We’d like to acknowledge them for all their hard work. Our thanks go to: • Robert A. Ivancso and Stephen J. Ivancso Jr., tournament administrator and secretary, respectively. • The National Officers and Home Office staff of the WPA. • Louis A. Fodor and George F. Mirkovich, tournament coadministrators. • All those who donated prizes for the scholarship raffle. • The bakers who provided the delicious pastries for the reception. • The staff and management of Princess lanes and the Holiday Inn Greentree. Of course, our biggest “thank you” goes to all our wonderful bowlers and their guests, without whom there would be no tournament. You folks make it all worthwhile. We hope to see you all next May in Cleveland! A total of $11,361 was raised during the three-day event. Most of that figure, or $9,710, was pledged or donated during the annual meeting of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation held Friday, May 28. Leading the list of donors at the meeting were Branch 18 Lincoln Park, Mich., which donated $2,000 and Branch 14 Cleveland with a $1,000 donation. The family of the late Gus G. Nagy collectively donated $700 in memory of the WPA's former national secretary. The remainder of the funds were raised through the awards dinner raffle ($1,759) and activities at the bowlers reception Friday evening ($162). During the foundation's meeting, WPA National President George S. Charles Jr. noted the scholarship foundation this year will exceed the $1 million mark in total grants awarded since the program's inception. "The scholarship foundation has an outstanding record of providing strong financial support [to our youth] thanks to you." The foundation also elected 14 at-large members to its board of directors. They are Dianne Charles, Alexander Goydan, Betty Holguin, Thomas House, Charles Johns, Michelle LaFlame, Margaret Leonardo, Joan Mauerman, Gregory Nagy, Frank Radvany, Anne Marie Schmidt, Carol Truesdell, Irene Voss and E. E. Vargo. 12 William Penn Life, July 1999
