Postmaster: If undelivered, please send form 3579 to: William Penn Association 709 Brighton Road Pittsburgh, PA 15233 Annual language camp set for August PITTSBURGH - Members who would like to learn the Hungarian language or who would like to re­fresh their Hungarian language skills are invited to attend the WPA’s 9th Annual Hungarian Lan­guage Camp this summer. The camp will be in session from Sunday, Aug. 2, to Saturday, Aug. 8, at Penn Scenic View in Rockwood, Pa. Any WPA life-ben­efit members age 18 or older may register for the camp. Instruction will be offered at ei­ther a beginner or an intermediate level, or both. The level of instruc­tion to be offered will be deter­mined by the needs of those mem­bers expressing a sincere interest in attending the camp. Students will receive 25 hours of instruction focusing on practical usage of the Hungarian language. The camp will be limited to 25 stu­dents, allowing our experienced teachers to give more individual attention to each student and allow­ing more time for useful exercises. Instructional sessions will be held twice daily, Monday through Friday. Each day will start with breakfast followed by a morning session. After breaking for lunch, students will reconvene for an af-GBU’s Rauer chosen as Fraternalist of the Year temoon session. Following dinner each day, all students and camp personnel will gather for enjoyable social activi­ties. Students can use these activi­ties to practice their new skills. The cost for the week is still only $200 per person. The costs includes lodging, all meals, instruction and learning materials. Clean linens and towels will be provided. The deadline for reservations is July 1, 1998. Reservations will be taken on a first-come/first-served basis. Those whose reservations are received after the 25 student limit is reached will be placed on a waiting list in the order in which their reservations were received. A limited number of double rooms will be available on a first­­come/first-served basis. All other students will be housed in dormi­tory-style accommodations. To reserve your space in our lan­guage camp, complete the reserva­tion form found in this issue and send it, along with your deposit of $50 per person, to the WPA Home Office. The balance of the fee will be due July 1. Rauer, national president of the Greater Beneficial Union of Pittsburgh (GBU), has been named the 1998 “Fraternalist of the Year” by the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pitts­burgh (FSGP). He will be honored at a testimonial banquet at the Green Tree Marriott Hotel in Pitts­burgh on April 25. Mr. Rauer emigrated from Ger­many to the United States in 1956. He joined GBU in 1960, becoming a member of a lodge in Ann Arbor, Mich. An active member, he held various lodge offices, including dis­trict president and delegate to the GBU national convention. He became a member of the GBU Board of Directors in 1979 when he was chosen to serve as a regional vice president, a position he held for almost 10 years. In Oc­tober 1988, Mr. Rauer was chosen to fill the vacant position of national vice president. In 1990, that position was changed to a full-time one, neces­sitating him and his family to move to GBU’s headquarters in Pitts­burgh. It also resulted in his resig­nation from the University of Human rights workshop to be held in June ADA, OH - The Ninth Annual Human Rights Workshop spon­sored by the Hungarian American Coalition will be held June 12 to 14 at Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pa. The workshop will focus on practical know-how about human rights and minority issues in east central Europe, particularly in Slovakia, Romania and Yugoslavia. Specialists in government rela­tions, grassroots politics, informa­tion networks and the media will provide presentations on accessing and influencing American policy in this region. Michigan where he had been an administrator for more than 30 years. Mr. Rauer is a past president of both the Michigan and Pennsylva­nia state fraternal congresses. His has promoted his ethnic heri­tage and German-American rela­tions by serving as past president of Ann Arbor’s German Society, Ann Arbor’s Multi-Ethnic Alliance, and the Alliance of German Soci­eties of Pittsburgh. He is currently a member of Ann Arbor’s Schwäbischer Unterstützungs Verein, Detroit’s German-Ameri­can Cultural Center and Pittsburgh’s Teutonia Männerchor. He and his wife, Marianne, have a daughter, Christina MacKeller, and a son, Branden. The Fraternalist of the Year award is the highest honor be­stowed by the FSGP, a trade orga­nization representing 22 fraternal benefit societies and other busi­nesses which advise and support the operations of those fratemals.
