December 1998, William Penn Life, Page 3 Festival of Trees opens with reception Dec. 6 NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - The 10th annual Festival of Trees, featuring the traditions of 12 ethnic groups, will open with a reception Dec. 6 at the museum of the American Heritage Foundation in New Brunswick. A special program of holiday music, yuletide celebration and traditional refreshments will all be part of the opening reception. The Festival of Trees includes exhibits of Victorian decorations, the Menorah and the traditions of Belarus, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Hispanic-Latino, Hungary, Italy, Scotland, Sweden and Ukraine. Community groups and organizations are invited to decorate each tree. The museum is also featuring an exhibition called “Suzanne Szász: Her Life and Photographs.” It is a retrospective display of one of the top magazine photographers and photo essayists of the 1950’s and 60’s. Ms. Szász is particularly wellknown for her photographs of children. The Festival of Trees and Szász exhibition will be open from Dec. 6 to Jan. 31, 1999. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Sunday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Guided tours are available. For more information call (732) 846-5777. Like many of you, I spend many hours in the kitchen during the holiday season (and I love every minute of it). My Christmas gift to you, dear readers, is a recipe for that classic Hungarian holiday treatkalács (nut roll). It not only adds a Magyar touch to your holiday table, but also makes a great gift for those special people in your life. Boldog karácsonyi ünnepeket! Kalács (Refrigerated Nut Roll) 5 cups flour 1/2 tsp. salt 3 tblsp. sugar 7 eggs separated % lb. butter or shortening 1 cup milk 1 yeast cake dissolved in 1/2 cup warm milk Sift flour, salt and sugar in deep bowl; add butter; mix by hand as you would for pie crust. Add egg yolks, 1 cup milk and the milk/yeast mixture; mix until smooth and the dough separates from the side of the bowl. Roll dough in waxed paper; let stand in refrigerator for 2 hours. Cut dough into 4 pieces. Roll out one piece on lightly floured board to %-inch thickness; spread filling on dough, roll up, and place in pan. Repeat process with other three pieces. Let rest 10 minutes. Bake in 350 degree oven for 1 hour.
