Here are some idea starters provided by the National Fraternal Congress of America. * Plant a memorial tree in a city park in honor of your city’s fraternal volunteers. * Work with an established literacy program to help an adult learn to read. (National Literacy Hotline 1-800-228-8813 or Literacy Volunteers of America 1-315-445-8000) * Sponsor a school supply drive to collect new pens, pencils, notebooks, scissors, rulers and other needed materials. * Set aside a week to work with WPA bowling tourney entries due by April 18 Continued from Page 1 this prize, a bowler must be an adult life-benefit member of the WPA by April 1, 1997, with at least one-year’s premium paid. On Saturday evening bowlers and guests will gather in casual attire for the annual bowling tournament dinner-dance at the Holiday Inn. The evening will feature a pre-dinner cash bar, dinner, door prizes and lots of fraternal fellowship. A special children’s menu will be available for guests age 12 and under. The Home Office, bowling committee and members of the host branch—Branch 18 Lincoln Park, Mich.—are all working hard to make this an especially memorable weekend for all who attend. We’re planning a number of special surprises that will help make this one of the best tournaments ever. We hope you and your family will join us for a great weekend. Send in your reservations and entry forms as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing you in Michigan May 23! Happy St. Patrick’s Day March 17 a homeless shelter doing building improvement projects such as carpentry, painting, landscaping and playground construction. * Donate smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and dead-bolt locks to seniors who need them. * With a hospital’s permission, make visits to the children’s ward and arrange to play a game with or read a book to young patients. * Supply a homeless shelter, hospital or day care center with new toys. * Organize to clean up a forgotten, historic cemetery. * Serve as errand escorts for a day or perform the errands yourself for people who find it difficult to get around. These are just a handful of ideas to go along with the volunteer projects you and your branch may already conduct. Whether you try something new or make plans to help a favored local charity or cause, the important thing is for you and your branch to be involved during this special week. Fraternalists like you and your fellow branch members do a lot for your communities. Now, it’s up to you to spread the word about the good work you and other fraternalist perform.
